This is why Covid activists have been screaming that mask bans aren’t about crime

They’re designed to make it easier to implement a surveillance state - which should concern even most committed anti masker

Kroger partners with Microsoft for facial recognition software to create “dynamic pricing”

Automation in Retail Is Even Worse Than You Thought

New technology is not just making shopping more challenging for workers and consumers—it’s poised to rip off the most vulnerable.

The Nation
@broadwaybabyto happy Germany is not good at digitalization for the first time

@vgoller @broadwaybabyto Actually, the German police is quite good avoiding being GDPR compliant when it comes to introducing all the exciting new technologies.

Interested citizens usually find it just mentioned in the smallprint.

@broadwaybabyto called it in 2020.
I kept rebutting anti maskers with surveillance resistance… but no one I talked to that was anti mask at the time was anti surveillance… fucking wild, the mental gymnastics.

@broadwaybabyto surge-priced vegetables, hooray. there is absolutely no disincentive for supermarket chains with regards to adopting this.

the cyberpunk apocalypse happened, but it wasn't cool so we ignored it.

@broadwaybabyto

They _really_ want us to grow our own food, huh?

@401matthall @broadwaybabyto they'll probably ban that eventually for those that still can

@401matthall @broadwaybabyto

Until the food-grower enforcement drones catch you daring to do it 🤷‍♂️

@brianstorms

So, hawk training to fight the drones is probably pretty labor intensive, huh?

@broadwaybabyto

@broadwaybabyto In such stores it is crucial never to use their app, to pay only cash, and if they are using facial recognition to wear dark sunglasses as well as a mask.

If they push hard enough, a dedicated campaign of targetted shoplifting can force them to shut down, like that Wal-Mart they chased out of DC.

@broadwaybabyto from a programming standpoint, I'm unclear how this works

Is there facial recognition at the *cashier*?

Simply showing a higher price on the shelf doesn't affect what I am charged - there must be something connecting/happening at the checkout point, or none of this actually works

Can anyone explain better than this article?

@broadwaybabyto chatting about it with friends - would seem that the facial recognition matches you against the data they've purchased

you don't need to sign up for a card or app; they know who you are when you walk into the store for the first time

@codebyjeff @broadwaybabyto As I understand it the customer tracking to set personalized prices would look something like this:
1. database (DB) of your data
2. facial recognition connects you to the DB when you walk in the door
3. connecting that ID with a computer vision (CV) system tracking you in the store
3. connecting the CV to dynamic pricing on shelf labels, changing the price when you get near
4. connecting the DB to the checkout so when CV sees you there prices adjust in the register.
@Mabande @codebyjeff @broadwaybabyto I suppose this is doable in theory, but also wildly complicated in a store with a couple of hundred shoppers. Surveillance possible for sure, and target to be on shelf video ads, but charging different customers different prices for the same product? I don’t think collapsing capitalism is capable of that on a large scale.
@VirginiaHolloway @codebyjeff @broadwaybabyto True. More plausible with a price based on the average of the group closest to the label, not micro-targeting the individual.
Researchers find racial discrimination in ‘dynamic pricing’ algorithms used by Uber, Lyft, and others

A preprint study shows ride-hailing services like Uber, Lyft, and Via charge higher prices in certain neighborhoods based on racial and other biases.

VentureBeat
@broadwaybabyto so, what? They'll check your fico score before deciding what to charge you?
@slotrak @broadwaybabyto f*** yeah. It's like golf right?

@slotrak @broadwaybabyto if your score is low enough and you can't afford to buy things, you get them for free.

Hell, we can do that now. Or at least we should. Mask up, leave the phone at home.

@Crow @slotrak @broadwaybabyto

People with few alternatives will pay more, just like it is now for groceries, insurance, rent, etc. People with more resources can afford to get in their cars and go to other retailers, or to Costco. People who don’t own cars or have time constraints can’t invest in shopping around. Until now this dynamic kept grocery stores disciplined, at least in places with a competitive market.

@AriadneBlasterbolt @Crow @slotrak @broadwaybabyto OK, hear me out: the people who have been profiled as poor can set up as personal shoppers for the ones who get gouged on prices. 😀
@slotrak @broadwaybabyto Yes. That happens now. The data in our credit reports has been collected for decades, and most consumers don’t realize how frequent it is. I used to work in advertising data mining, and I quit because of the immorality.
@broadwaybabyto you do realise that most stores in western countries think USA, UK and Australia already implement this as a condition of entry.
@broadwaybabyto I tried not masking, and every time someone invades my personal space it goes back on. I just prefer to wear a mask when food shopping. If I can't wear the mask I will find another food shop.

@broadwaybabyto

If you're not here for money or your sex life, I hope your notable following offers support.

This story makes me want to shop in a disguise & I would do it.

@broadwaybabyto masks don't stop modern facial recognition. Chinese surveillance software was able to identify people with masks 10 years ago, by now even Microsoft has caught up. (I'm not shitting on masks, I still mask up in all public, enclosed spaces)
@broadwaybabyto ob look it's all the weird shit anti vaxxers were worried about, but we're ignorantly, and unknowingly supporting the whole god dawned time!
@broadwaybabyto Why are the rich so hellbent on making life harder? They'll dynamically raise and lower prices to pigeonhole people into the quality of life that the authoritarians approve of and no better.

@gooba42 @broadwaybabyto Fear and anti-social personality disorder?

It’s interesting conservatives lose their shit when you mention the French Revolution. They can do the math and know they’re vastly outnumbered.

Keeping us poor and wanting more protects them by keeping us divided

@broadwaybabyto I just sent Kroger an email asking them to confirm or deny that they will be using facial recognition software in their stores. I also emailed Publix to confirm that they will NOT.

Electronic shelf labels are the technology I would have killed for when I was a scan price clerk and had to manually change out over 2,000 tags a week. That part would have been a huge convenience for weekly ad changes. BUT, to use it for surge pricing would be evil. And that EDGE technology that uses cameras for facial recognition? Huge red flag.

@broadwaybabyto It might be time to become (even) more selective where you buy your food.
@broadwaybabyto
If a national mask ban is put in place, I'm wearing my mask under a motorcycle helmet.

@broadwaybabyto

Even TheNation itself has some surveilling to do

@broadwaybabyto

wtf first shinkflation and prices that will never come down and food that will never be 16 ounces again and now they want to charge different prices based on crap tools and quadruple our profits and keep us spending and in debt.

gtfo jerks

@broadwaybabyto time to sign up for a CSA/farm share!

Or shop your local food co-op.

Seriously, find ways to shop outside the mega grocery stores and you'll be doing many good things at once, for both you and the planet
