By popular demand, a single post to boost global switch day across multiple platforms on February 1st 2025.

For those who can no longer get behind Musk or Meta's new policies and feel like switching (e.g. from #Whatsapp to #Signal, from #Instagram to #Pixelfed or from #X to #Mastodon) I made you some graphics to use freely in communicating with your contacts.

Let’s lead by example 🙂

@sylv_a Once people come to Mastodon, how do we encourage them to opt into #FullTextSearch? One reason why I still occasionally use X since moving to PMG in fourth quarter 2022 is that X still lets me #search for what others are saying about a particular topic, even if I fail to #GuessTheHashtag.
@PinoBatch @sylv_a I don't think they ever will, as it's somewhat of a feature. Don't want your post to escape containment immediately? Don't use a hashtag. It's a way to stop trolls seeking out marginalised people to bully, when they're just trying to post about their day to their 20 mutuals.
@Aerliss @sylv_a If I search a hashtag on a major Mastodon server (like m.s) and find myself to be the only person posting in a hashtag, does that usually mean I guessed the wrong hashtag for a topic? Or is it more likely that I'm the only person in the fediverse interested in that topic?
@PinoBatch @sylv_a could be either, but I'd say the latter is unlikely. A lot of people forget to use tags, and yeah, that means conversations might never be had. But that's the price the Masto team deems acceptable to protect people who don't want their posts to go too far around the fediverse.
@Aerliss @sylv_a Would you agree with this conclusion?
- Mastodon is good for having conversations mostly with your mutuals, especially about marginalization or other sensitive topics.
- Bluesky, like X before it, is good for getting a sense of what strangers are saying about a less sensitive yet possibly more obscure topic, such as a particular toy line.
