My daughter came into the room distraught and bemused by #TikTok going dark. She knew it was coming, but still...a lot of GenZ are feeling kind of rootless, like a personal landmark was pointlessly destroyed by govt who clearly give no fucks about actual data security, or these laws would have applied to all the American data harvesting commercial social media platforms.

And I, being an old, and having seen many things come and go since the days of blue boxes and usenet, tried to sympathize...but she rightfully pointed out that none of those things were legislated out of business. This is different. This is government deliberately controlling speech and demanding the sale of private property. Using the same canards they've been using her whole life: It's national security. It's for your own good. You can't see proof, it's classified.

She's right, it's nonsense.

The vibe here is way different, I don't know if we'll see an influx of #tiktokrefugee, but welcome if you're here!

@MissConstrue

I personally am not a fan of TikTok and it's addictive nature. But, as you said, if it was really to make ppl's lives better, it would affect all of social media platforms.

You know what's it about? Gaza.

Israeli soldiers posted themselves committing war crimes on the platform and people all around the world saw what they were up to. And this was labelled as "Chinese Propaganda"...

@MissConstrue GenZ is really getting it these days... and that's not fair. They have done nothing to warrant the level of (legislative) attack they're under.
They are not liking their world and what the previous generations actions have done...and I cannot blame them.

Luigi is GenZ

@MissConstrue

With bonus "Won't you think of the CHILDREN!?!?"

@MissConstrue I am an oldie and joined simply to push my nieces follower count to a goal.

I found a wealth of mental health/ personal growth content and a growing cohort of men asking other men to do better. The site is as full of garbage as any other site but it pushes what you are looking for. If you want rage bait you will find rage bait, it is that simple. On other sites we have to “block” the content we do not want. I never blocked a thing on TikTok. If it was not appealing, a simple swipe made it go away. There are people healing like never before on that site and healthy people cannot be controlled.

@mikeHarvison @MissConstrue Yep, I had a stint creating videos for exmormons on TikTok in '21 and there were various thriving anti-cult and exmo communities there with heavy crossover. There was also a heavy Native American decolonization scene there that bled into my feed often, taught me a few things, and perked my interest which I have since followed up on elsewhere.

Entire political actions have been organized and successfully pulled off in TikTok.

@MissConstrue TikTok gets a lot of condescension from people who don’t use it, but my last few days on it my entire fyp was people telling stories of how it helped them start their business, get discovered by employers, educate themselves based on content from independent experts, gain the awareness and confidence to escape abusive relationships, etc etc

Also if it was such a National security risk, then why was like 50% of Washington on it? Right…

#tiktok #tiktokrefugee

@jadeisnotokay @MissConstrue I think that 50% of Washington being on it *was* the security risk
@jadeisnotokay @MissConstrue people who aren't on it, didn't experience what it really was just believe the propoganda or best case "feel bad for you" but still don't get it. Anyone on TikTok, that used it: clearly knows it isn't "just an app" but a connection, a bright light... It was personally pivotal in my healing journey. There isn't a way to explain it's impact retroactively for those who don't experience it. Better to help them understand is speak about the money lost

@MissConstrue Well, except that TikTok wasn’t blocked at all. Bytedance itself decided to stop answering US-originated requests. There’s been no order to block; and no ISP taking that action.

What we’re seeing is a dance, moving around looking for bargaining chips. Pretending this is the govt blocking things is one of the feints in that dance.

@MissConstrue But the gov didn't actually shut it down. Be sure to tell them the full story.
@MissConstrue Does she hope Trump to fix it? (Real question)
@MissConstrue Good point. Others point to previous social media platforms that disappeared suddenly, but I don't think any were due to direct government action.

@MissConstrue I say make this the first of many actions against any company, foreign or domestic, that surveils users. Now do X, FB and all the rest. As for the kids, the sooner they learn that they are just a commodity to all of these businesses the better.

They are the content makers and they will inhabit other spaces and bring their joy and energy with them. And I wish for them that their next stop is not owned by an oligarch, hegemon, or data-perv.

@MissConstrue the way it has been done would seem to be an own goal for the Democrats and an absolute gift for Donald Trump

@MissConstrue I think it’s sad that influencing elections, data harvesting and causing suicidal ideation in teens is all fine as long as it’s a domestic company that is doing it.

We can damage and exploit our own, but you’re not doing it.
#TikTok

@MissConstrue The fact that the First Felon has very bigly indicated that he's up for sale and will use his powers to enrich himself has not seem to see the light of day with our current corporate news media.
@MissConstrue @keith It’s a game. TikTok shuts down and flutters its eyelashes at Trump. He postures and rants then relents. TikTok comes back full of pro-Trump and pro-Xi messaging.
@MissConstrue I know it's not the point of your post (and I'm sure someone's mentioned it already) but hopefully TikTok's loss in the US can be https://loops.video 's -- and the Fediverse's in general -- gain. Has your daughter tried it yet? :-)

at my age, i'm used to it

@MissConstrue

While the second paragraph is the real meat of this post, I think.

This is what hit me the hardest because it is exactly the point I've been making with folks, digital “landmark was pointlessly destroyed by govt who clearly give no fucks about actual data security.”

@MissConstrue Remind her it was a Rethuglican who sponsored the bill, and the Rethug House who passed it with a veto-proof majority & stuffed it into the Ukraine appropriations bill. Then point her at the Fediverse solution https://www.theverge.com/2024/10/26/24280075/fediverse-tiktok-alternative-loops-pixelfed-mastodon-activitypub-signups-open
A TikTok alternative called Loops is coming for the fediverse

Loops, a decentralized version of TikTok, began accepting signups this week, promising short-form video posting without third-party advertising.

@MissConstrue "distraught " is concerning - these are synthetic environments run by organizations with their own agendas ( TikTok is not the all-benevolent host of all good things - just like Meta & Google aren't demon-spawn: they are corporations, which means they are by nature inherently sociopathic - TikTok just has the added cachet of being in thrall to the CCP).
I hope she has other, offline, pursuits & interests that can fill her time; online should be enriching, not fulfilling.
