Wanna know why "modern AAA" games are basically cash shops these days?

Because triple A game studios are now getting close to spending a BILLION dollar on 1 single game to develop

70 bucks for a game simply isn't enough to earn it back

I'm not making this up.. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War budget was..

US $700 million

Glad I'm an indie dev who gives games away for free without this bs

Skins, lootboxes, DLCs, game currency and the list goes on and on!

Kids nowadays don't stand a chance against studios who are using literal manipulation to sell as much as possible

Let's call it what it is.. gambling

@stux

"Grooming" them for gambling & over-consumption of junk 😔

@stux gambling has gotten bad here in the States. They advertise all the time on TV, especially during sporting events. Crazy things to gamble on too, to keep you betting all through an event.

Ah well, look at that!

Federal Trade Commission
@stux I‘m surprised with how long it took, but wow am I glad they did!
@stux The number implies about 500+ well-paid developers for 5 years. Which is crazy
@tikend And they maybe have 10-20% of the devs, if that long

@tikend @stux Remember, it's not just devs -- it includes mo-cap actors, voice artists, musicians, 3D and 2D artists, and scriptwriters, too.

The big expensive headline games are much more like blockbuster films in their production than indie game development.

@darkling @stux I've simplified those roles under developers. Still, even major movies do not have budgets like this
@tikend @darkling It's just for numbers indeed, game dev is super complicated 😆 at least on that scale
@tikend @darkling @stux don't forget rent. Desks in office blocks cost nearly as much as a worker does. Land lords continue to leach off all enterprise.
@tikend @stux you can make it 200 to 400 devs going in and out of the project for 8 years, money lost on tools tested and (not) used and some 7 figures VP salaries
@tikend But where is room for all the juicy advertising? I think in those 700 million the advertisement budget is included. @stux
@stux wait, it was for single title?! jesus, that is beyond obscene, it is incredibly wasteful
@stux much of those costs go to a-list actors for their likenesses and motion capture, and their voices. then likely a lot more goes out the door to licensing certain brands so they can be in the game too. then if there are consoles in play, those console companies (sony/microsoft etc) they want their pound of flesh too
@Viss Oh absolutely! But this is getting out of hand
@stux undoubtedly, yeah
@Viss Esp with fails like Concord recently 😮 If they're not re-using it, it's all wasted..

@stux i think the gaming industry is taking its cues from shit like the discovery/warner bros merger - where they literally wrote off ENTIRE SHOWS that had not premiered yet so they could get a break on their taxes.

the artists were super fucking pissed too - they told folks to pirate their show because otherwise there was no way for anybody to watch the stuff they spent years on.

its bonkers

@stux I haven’t played a game in ages. So imagine my shock when I just wanted to do a quickie on a random FIFA game on a PS4 and for most of the time I was trying to avoid downloading the internet and the other part of time avoiding not to subscribe to stupid services from PS or EA

I think I didn’t even get to play

@stux and then there is me. Playing 8 year old games on the PS4 with my girlfriend. We are having a blast.

There is no reason for us to buy/play those 'quadruple A games'. They don't look so much better and the gameplay isn't more fun. But if they think, they need to put 700 million into a single game, which somehow isn't better then their last game, which costed less... well. I couldn't care less 🤷‍♂️
