I've received 5 VC offers "to chat" regarding Pixelfed in the past few days.

Not for sale.

Pixelfed belongs to the people.

I'd rather be broke and true to my beliefs, than sell out.

That's why I'm organizing a Kickstarter to fund the ethical development of Pixelfed, Loops and more.

It's time that someone stood up to them, instead of joining them.

Are you with me?

@dansup A Kickstarter, that's a great idea!

@danieruotakuboy @dansup

What's a kickstarter?

@porru @dansup It's like a donation campaign to reach a goal. It's common to see projects using kickstarters to get some financial support.

@dansup

Who are we : the people
What do we want : democratic social media
When do we want it : NOW !

Doing a good job Daniel, never lose that attitude, never get corrupted.

And, for those wondering about this, we need to ensure that @dansup (who seems well-meaning but IS human and fallible and will have bills to pay, maybe unexpected big bills one day) isn't tempted by increasing piles of VC cash by ensuring he's not worried about money. By giving him some of our own. It's an investment in keeping VCs away!
@dansup ooh, 'Pixelfed Foundation'?
@dansup Love your idealism, keep it up πŸ’ͺ
@dansup I saw that disturbing broad loops license where users don't own the content. What's that about?
@gunstick @dansup he changed it yesterday. It's much better now

@dansup I bet their brains broke, whenever I meet with some idiot who thinks everything is for sale I can't help but pity them. They are so poor they only have money and think that is and will be enough.

Poor sad bastards.

@dansup

"We aim to be the first Fediverse app with a billion people"

I'm supportive of the effort, but this is a bit cringe.

@dansup I seem to be blocked from contributing due to my location, but i’m with you! πŸ™‚
@dansup You should send them a link to the kickstarter. If they want to help fund you, they can do it like everyone else.
@dansup imagine you took the offers "to chat" just to troll them lol
@dansup Absolutely. Just deleted my IG so let's do this!
@dansup What ever your kickstarter is offering, Iβ€˜m in.
@dansup @niklaskorz how about sponsors? Im willing to run some servers but failed to install dependencies on debian. one wants php 8.3 while debian 12 comes with 8.2.
@dansup
I joined today and posted my first picture. I am eternally grateful and will support you (us!) along the way.
@dansup Fantastic! I’ve just logged into Kickstarter for the first time in a long, long while and followed your effort. Looking forward to being part of the launch!
@dansup you could fork, sell pixelfed and only develop the new fork if the price is right.
@dansup Just tell the VC's that at this time you're only accepting non-equity investments at a negative rate of return. ;)
@dansup you are truly a rare breed. Will definitely be donating once it opens.
@dansup @pixelfed VC is what led to the demise of Mammoth. The original developer sold it, the new team made changes, and when they tried to monetize for the investors the project died.

@dansup Totally up to you and I can understand if you'd rather not, but it'd be hilarious if you published their identities and pitches.

Might make them think twice about approaching projects this way in the future.

@dansup I hope you're extremely proud of the work you've done but I wonder if you can address the disconnect between the Loops TOS and the philosophy you're describing here.
@Gustodon @dansup Can you give me the gist of your concern? I really want to be 100% on board with this loops pixelfed project as a FOSS ethical replacement for instagram. I'm thinking whatever might be necessary to make it work like that will take lots of eyes on these details and I think the developer @dansup has his heart in the right place and will care if there are details he might want to reconsider, especially during these critical initial conditions

@resl I want that, too. I was concerned about the language regarding ownership and distribution but I've just been told that that particular TOS is being reworked from a time-saving boilerplate.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply.

@Gustodon
Sweet 😎 Thank you too for keeping your eyes peeled and being communicative with your foss community. These moments where things are working give me hope
@dansup
Those guys are only gonna buy it then kill it. I've seen it over and over again. Kill the competition, suffocate the innovation and ideas, snuff out the passion. You get paid off, but it's your own end. Keep it like it is now though, and you're a legend.

@dansup "bro", find yourself some humility. "Chats" with VCs are a dime a dozen, and you literally compared yourself to Jobs earlier today. I hope you're going to bring on some actual people with actual ethics to make that ethical development thing happen...

Take it down a notch. The excessive self-promotion and ego is going to be your downfall.

@tim @dansup
I think it's probably too late, my dude. Look at the ToS for loops - he is poised to see it all:

https://bajsicki.com/blog/loops-video-terms/

loops.video - phil@bajsicki:~$

Been a while. I’ve mostly been posting on the Fedi, but I feel like this is a rather important topic that requires attention. Recently @dansup has been posting a bunch about loops.video, a federated alternative to Instagram/ TikTok. While I agree that an open, free and federated alternative to these platforms is necessary, I am consistently finding myself questioning the intentions encoded in their Terms of Service. Before going further, I’ll clarify: loops.video is not currently federating, but federation is planned using the ActivityPub protocol. If it does happen, and the ToS isn’t properly adjusted, it will cause problems.

@dansup Question: why a Kickstarter and not something like OpenCollective, which would provide a means for ongoing funding?

@dansup Thank you for sticking to your guns. Keep trudging on, the community has your back.

- A current Instagram user actively seeking an alternative.

@dansup Yeah but u sitll need resources and HQ to operate.
Resources to provide cyber security, social impact and great marketing.
You are too quick to reject VCs which could combine your ideas with a great impact...
@matidmgdef @dansup VCs would just take over and shut down or sell the project.
@matidmgdef @dansup The main problem with VCs is that they will want to claw the money they invested back.
@dansup Thank you for your commitment! I'm in!
@dansup we are with you! πŸ’ͺ🏻

@dansup

Consider a 501(c)(3)?

(I know it's probably a pain.)

@dansup I'm with you. To all the folks who are showing support for this, I am following a bunch of you just for being part of this, to try to make this alliance as strong and as strongly connected as possible. There is power in numbers 😎
@dansup so long as funding is done right. Going with a for profit model I don’t see longevity

Lets wait. You can buy nearly everyone.

@dansup

But you're passing up the chance to earn billions, perchance, and be as insatiable as muskkk or suckerberg! πŸ˜„
