Irenes (many)@SnoopJ @aud we do prefer the fansub approach personally, of highlighting the cultural elements that differ rather than glossing over them, and explaining them as needed. that's our preference as a reader/watcher/player, because the cultural stuff is something we want to learn and that's part of what experiencing the work is to us. there are good reasons that's not universal.... but yeah
Erin 💽✨@ireneista @SnoopJ @aud this is kind of funny in a way, because I feel like these days fansubbers are much more likely to loalise things in ways that official anime translations will not, due to a combination of licensor meddling and limited time.
Modern dubs continue to go further, but official subs are often… overly literal, IMO.

I've had enough of the literal translations, I find I like the localizations, when they're done by people who are actually invested in the work (as fansubbers tend to be)
