we just stopped at a restaurant near the autobahn to hamburg to eat something and say that the MNT Reform Next campaign (it's our new 26mm thick 13" open hardware laptop) just went live aaaaa! https://www.crowdsupply.com/mnt/mnt-reform-next
MNT Reform Next

A new 12.5" open hardware laptop that is future-proof, modular, and highly performant

Crowd Supply
@mntmn The "Super" version is the same as the non "Super" with a SSD and more RAM? So the same eMMC size (256 GB)?
@copypasteninja yes all have 256GB eMMC as well, and you can add internal microSD express (basically another SSD)
@mntmn Such a cool video ❤️
@mntmn I will have to buy from Crowd Supply on launch, as we can’t float it yet in this stage of life. But I’m so excited!

@mntmn

Looks great, but maybe I missed it, but are there no reliable detaild about max resolutions featured and no DP Alt for USB-c?

@expertenkommision_cyberunfall *probably* no dp alt at launch but it is prepared to gain this function later via port board upgrade
@mntmn should i back now or wait for availability in the MNT shop to avoid it being shipped around to world only to come back to Germany? 😑
@mntmn Nice. Are there plans to send Linux support upstream?

@mntmn I want this to succeed so hard. From someone in the trenches of a closed hardware ecosystem this is exactly what the world needs.

If anyone needs convincing, I've seen first-hand how the MNT team do the right thing and how much they care. I'm sure they'll hit the funding goal, but please boost and share to your networks to make sure they smash it.

I'd purchase one myself, but I already have dozens (literally...) of laptops, and my wife would kill me if another turned up.

@hughsie @mntmn already at 62% after about a day. I think they've got this in the bag.
@mntmn Awesome! I can't wait to get my hands on this!
@mntmn it’s amazing to see how MNT is developing!
@mntmn Nice ! Whenever I'll need a new laptop, i'll probably buy one 😁
@mntmn Ah, northern Germany and their food!
@mntmn Looks so great! Currently between jobs so I can't justify backing right now. But definitely might consider ordering post-campaign!
@mntmn Awesome! Just backed the super black. Will there be an option for clicky switches?
@mntmn Woohoo! Could not be more excited. Congratulations on being almost halfway funded already on day 1 too, that is amazing. I only wish I'd woken up earlier to be closer to the front of the line....
@mntmn Super cool, würd mir gern einen bestellen. Allerdings mit Wifi6. Ist das in Planung? Lg

@mntmn ooooof it’s ON !

Small nitpick though, the sleeve is only available as a bundle with the 2 TB drive, which is a bit too much for me. Ah nevermind I’ll do without the sleeve… Godspeed

@mntmn ah man, I might need to sell my MBP M3 Max

@mntmn Nice, that's a dramatic improvement. I love the CNC'ed case/heatsink and the thickness is very reasonable now. The pure aluminum option looks awesome.

Well done!

EDIT: I'd love to see a adoption of eInk like https://www.crowdsupply.com/modos-tech/modos-paper-monitor as the display if possible in the future.

Modos Paper Monitor

A fast, low-latency, open-hardware e-paper monitor and dev kit

@mntmn I assume the Kintex-7 module works with this too? Has anyone done anything with that?

@mntmn

Hi,

This might be good to add to the campaign, and I am wondering as well, why would one want a reform NXT vs the original? I know you phrased it as more of a sidegrade initially, is this still true?

@mntmn Just out of curiosity as my current laptop still works well.

Is the wifi module supported by mainline linux? Could be mistaken but it seems like it needs a third-party module.
@mntmn
Does it make sense to buy via crowd supply, when I am located in Germany? Or does it get shipped around the world only to be reimported and shipped less then 50km were it was build?
@mntmn wishing you the best of luck with this one. Hoping the next one is thinner, lighter, non mechanical keyboard, NVMe as standard (with smaller drive options) and Framework laptop style interchangeable ports!
@mntmn huuuh infineon is a good wifi option? 0w0
@mntmn holy smokes it's gorgeous!
@mntmn Congrats!
Now I am just waiting for more data on hardware accelerated video (decode) for Firefox (including video, like YT) and Moonlight before hitting the purchase button.
@mntmn congrats on the launch! looks very cool, esp. the modular board design...
@mntmn Reminds me a bit of the 12" G4 Powerbook from Apple, nice – the Reform Next also is similar in size and weight to it. Now if we had a version with a RISC-V SoC...
@me_ @mntmn That’s a good comparison; that might be my favorite laptop i’ve ever owned, certainly relative to the tech of the day, and the Reform Next looks great.
@me_ @mntmn I believe if you get the FPGA module for it, they have a RISCV core that you can use, but that module is pretty pricey (and low on RAM, would be nice to see that upgraded).
@aarcov @mntmn I wonder if anyone tried to run the Milk-V Mars CM (JH7110 RISC-V quad core SoC on a RPi CM4-compatible board) instead of a Pi CM4 in the adapter that is available as an option for the Reform.
@me_ @mntmn That's a good point on the CM carrier, probably is the best way to go for a RISCV solution (although one may need to check the what the module has, as it's my understanding that not all of them have all the same IO (such as the Radxa CM5 not having the Ethernet PHY on board).
@mntmn this design is gorgeous. This is the machine I want.
@mntmn this is such a great looking machine and comparatively powerful too. I wish I could afford to get in on the action but alas it is not to be. Good luck with the campaign!
@mntmn Will there be additional photos of the different body options? I love the idea of the raw aluminum body (I've always liked the aluminum MacBook), but I also feel like the black body provides the most consistent style with keys and trackpad. Additionally, will the trackball module fit this and is there a chance of supporting alternate switches?
@mntmn Congrats! Will it also have the 'transparent' bottom case? (Or whatever the correct name is, see image  )
@mntmn: Waaah, ich kann doch nicht schon wieder 'n neuen Laptop kaufen! 😉
@mntmn I got a question. Have all three colours of the new MNT Reform Next laptop a Aluminium enclosure or is it just the Raw variant and black and purple is plastic?
@Laurenz0071 all are solid aluminum.
@mntmn thanks, there was an outlook for a stronger battery (like 8h Li-Ion). Ehen will this Option approximately be available?
Does the Laptop has a module comparable to a secure enclave, T2, TPM or similar? Are there open, modular variants of chips with such Funktion available? Thx
