@sparky Now Baarle-Hertog/Nassau isn't the best example to make that point. The border there looks like this:
@sparky Unpopular opinion: this issue most probably cannot be solved peacefully.
@sparky
Borders are just the outcome of rich people defending their made up right to the land, and the labor of those who live there.
Get rid of the rich, borders will crumble!
@sparky tbf baarle-nassau and baarle-hertog are kinda cool cuz like

it's in schengen anyway, and you can still have
movement there (though some laws differ)

And it was a result of historical trades that they tried to keep in the modern day borders as accurately as possible

It results in a fun and fascinating little thing

but yeah uh, laws may be different within different shapes formed by these lines but at least some countries let you move between them without papers

I've crossed a country border on foot without any papers and couldn't even tell exactly where the line was, that was really cool

But then we still have some schengen countries "temporarily" reintroducing border controls smh :<

And then we have like

The rest of the fucking world LMAO

Restricted movement - L

And then you're also bound for years at minimum to the lines you were born within

I no longer live in Ukraine but I still have its citizenship and still have to really worry about some laws regarding Ukraine and regarding Ukrainians in other countries

😭
@skye @sparky
Ok sorry to derail the convo but if y'all like/dislike fascinating weird borders consider reading "The City & The City" by China MiΓ©ville, it's a police mystery drama set in two city states that have like a Baarle-n/Baerle-H thing going on and it rules. (Also it's the main inspiration for Disco Elysium)
@AppleAmps @sparky @skye People have been trying to get me to play Disco Elysium forever and no one thought to mention that it was based on one of my favourite books?
@youseeatortoise @sparky @skye
Apparently not! But yeah a lot of the dynamic between the characters and the world in DE owes quite a lot to China MiΓ©ville, I'd really recommend playing it if you have the time.
@AppleAmps @sparky @skye Time, alas, is always the problem. I don't know how people fit in a gaming hobby on top of life.
@youseeatortoise @sparky @skye
Don't I know it, sister πŸ˜”
@sparky The weird thing is that this nonsense is really quite recent, only starting around 1900, yet within less than a lifetime of that it was accepted as the norm and things like the EU were set up as an exception.

@sparky

Let's remember modern passports date to 1914 and WWI. Useful, but not required.

@sparky

Yep, one note, "they have played us for absolute fools" implies a "they" who both decided to & were able to create this state of affairs. That's wrong. This shit show emerged from tribalism, limited information and chance. There's no "them". There's only us. And yes, though we're mostly friendly and kind, we're often stupid and cruel, particularly if being stupid and cruel about a thing is something we've done for a long time.

@sparky you're doing this wrong, you're supposed to exaggerate the truth and get people upset when using this template πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚
