Bill Teller High School | Abandoned America

Matthew Christopher's Abandoned America: a hauntingly beautiful urban exploration chronicle of the abandoned buildings in our midst and their fascinating histories.

@AbandonedAmerica wait the URL says William Penn High School, but the headline on the web page says Ted Teller High School. Which is it? :)

And I would love more info about what happened to this school! Great photos

@skyfaller Thank you. And I prefer not to disclose the name because this place is already trashed enough without inviting more people to do it.
@AbandonedAmerica Seems like we could solve several problems at once by hiring unhoused folks, and/or refugees to fix up abandoned buildings and neighborhoods.
Free housing but you have to fix it yourself? Plenty of people would take that offer.
Plenty of non-destitute people might even be interested as a way ouf of dead-end jobs.
Even a few burnt-out software engineers might be tempted.
@14mission I mean, in real life, that's how you get buildings being burnt down in the winter because people started fires in them for heat but on paper it sounds good
@AbandonedAmerica That's a fair point, but things could be handled a bit better with an actual program than just letting people be squatters (inspections for example). And occupants could start in spring so they have 3 seasons to add insulation and safe heating.
@14mission I love the idea, don't get me wrong, I just don't know that I have the faith in humanity to believe it would work in practice. Honestly, though I'd rather we just give people without homes safe and adequate shelter. These places are generally no longer safe for habitation unfortunately, even with some work out in. Maybe in spots that have just closed that would be more feasible
@AbandonedAmerica Well I think you are right that just letting a bunch of people move into an abandoned place and start a bunch of DIY repairs might not always work out that well.
For this to work would take a bit of organization, to make sure essential safety things, and basics like making sure the roof didn't leak, got taken care of first.
And unfortunately you would probably have to have some minimum standards of conduct and workload, and be willing to kick people out.
But these are all challenges, not insurmountable obstacles.
@AbandonedAmerica I may not be an activist but I do agree with what's written on the wall.
@brandon_trabon I can't, honestly. It sounds good, because of the anger over deforestation, but I think being respectful of our environment is important regardless of what others do. The threat of clear cutting doesn't justify or excuse, say, littering in a forest or abusing the plants/animals that live there. So I'd say the frustration in the statement is valid but in practice we are responsible for our own actions whether or not those of others are moral/ethical
@AbandonedAmerica @brandon_trabon I tho you’re misinterpreting the quote as an excuse to litter, rather than the outrage that someone else is just going to wholesale destroy it for profit
@jonathankoren @brandon_trabon I mean, we're talking about people who are spray painting on an abandoned building because they presume it will just be torn down so it's not that much of a stretch
@AbandonedAmerica @brandon_trabon I sincerely doubt that anyone is going to reopen that school without repainting it. Assuming it’s reopened at all
@jonathankoren out of curiosity, is it fun being exhausting? I genuinely wonder what enjoyment people derive from disagreeing with everything someone they don't know says, perhaps you could enlighten me.
@AbandonedAmerica @jonathankoren I'm not OK with the graffiti, I don't like when people do that even to abandoned buildings. I just do agree that everyone should be held to the same rules.
@AbandonedAmerica I actually didn't take it that way; I took it more like "if I'm going to be respectful of nature then so should everyone else".
@AbandonedAmerica I have never seen such fine penmanship in a graffito.
