14mission@AbandonedAmerica Seems like we could solve several problems at once by hiring unhoused folks, and/or refugees to fix up abandoned buildings and neighborhoods.
Free housing but you have to fix it yourself? Plenty of people would take that offer.
Plenty of non-destitute people might even be interested as a way ouf of dead-end jobs.
Even a few burnt-out software engineers might be tempted.

@14mission I mean, in real life, that's how you get buildings being burnt down in the winter because people started fires in them for heat but on paper it sounds good
@AbandonedAmerica That's a fair point, but things could be handled a bit better with an actual program than just letting people be squatters (inspections for example). And occupants could start in spring so they have 3 seasons to add insulation and safe heating.
@14mission I love the idea, don't get me wrong, I just don't know that I have the faith in humanity to believe it would work in practice. Honestly, though I'd rather we just give people without homes safe and adequate shelter. These places are generally no longer safe for habitation unfortunately, even with some work out in. Maybe in spots that have just closed that would be more feasible
@AbandonedAmerica Well I think you are right that just letting a bunch of people move into an abandoned place and start a bunch of DIY repairs might not always work out that well.
For this to work would take a bit of organization, to make sure essential safety things, and basics like making sure the roof didn't leak, got taken care of first.
And unfortunately you would probably have to have some minimum standards of conduct and workload, and be willing to kick people out.
But these are all challenges, not insurmountable obstacles.
