Hmm, just for fun, let's look up the cleanup procedures for norovirus. (No norovirus here, but seeing a friend here whose family has come down with it). Interestingly enough, hand sanitizer doesn't work with norovirus. Looks like soap and water ALSO don't work very well. (requires bleach). ALSO (not on this handout), heating food may not necessarily remove noro. AND, it floats through the air. ๐Ÿคข

@ai6yr When we have norovirus outbreaks at school, that's the only time we have permission to use bleach. The rest of the time we have to use weaker chemicals for cleaning. We have a special district cleaning crew just for norovirus outbreaks (& rodent infestations).
@ai6yr Norovirus absolutely sucks. My oldest had it when he was 18 months, and so my wife and I both got it too.

@ai6yr https://www.cdc.gov/infection-control/hcp/norovirus-guidelines/summary-recommendations.html#cdc_generic_section_3-hand-hygiene

Ethanol Alcohol based cleaners for hands recommended "Consider ethanol-based hand sanitizers (60-95%) as the preferred active agent compared to other alcohol or non-alcohol based hand sanitizer products during outbreaks of norovirus gastroenteritis."

Infection Control
@cvvhrn Thanks! Had no idea they existed.
@ai6yr @cvvhrn Or--you know--Everclear. Maybe even vodka?
@cvvhrn @ai6yr what's the other one isn't there a benzo something or other that also works?
@MsMerope @ai6yr Not sure?
@cvvhrn @ai6yr
Benzalkonium Chloride?
I'd look on the internet but ....
pfffft....

@MsMerope @cvvhrn Ah yes, that one.

I checked, and every single one of the hand sanitizers I have is ethanol. ๐Ÿค”

@ai6yr I got it on a road trip once, then everyone else got it. Kind of glad we were in hotels at the time, but feel bad for the others who stayed there after us. Which, makes you wonder about hotels...
@ai6yr as soon as I saw the Noro wastewater levels spike on campus, I watched lectures and studied from home for a full week. Glad I did, I knew someone that caught it, they were in rough shape.
@technotion Yikes... but also, good to know you can spot noro outbreaks on campus through wastewater!

@ai6yr Yeah, it's run by the University, which is very cool. Looks like Noro and COVID are on the rise, and will probably remain elevated until I return in January. *sigh* here we go!

@ai6yr don't know if the staff on the floating norovirus delivery systems (aka cruise ships) are aware of this...
@ai6yr a glass of bleach keeps the doctor away, wasn't it a US President who said something like that not that many years ago
@ai6yr Norovirus is EVIL in how well it spreads. That mention of particles spreading through the air... toilets aerosolize it when flushed.
@vxo Wish me luck. My son, who has been hauling patients with norovirus to the ER for the last two months, appears to have... issues.
@ai6yr oh dear. I hope he's okay. I have no idea if this is one of those things you can develop immunity to or just how badly it screws things up with repeated exposure
@vxo Oh, he'll be okay, but I am just getting over something else and I DO NOT WANT NOROVIRUS LOL.
@ai6yr thanks! Hope I donโ€™t need but nice to have
