Indie Publishing friendos:

How does one/can one approach small independent bookstores about getting one's books sold by them?

In your experience, are they open to sexy stories - I'm thinking my erotic romance novellas. And maybe the novel I have planned for next year. Like. It probably won't happen, but I've never looked into it and was wondering if anyone has experience (or a bookstore...)

@RubyJones I haven't tried this, but apparently the best chance for success is to order a small number (like 5) of paper books yourself, then talk to the owner and come to some kind of arrangement where they pay you for every book they sell, and you take back whatever isn't sold.

This massively reduces the financial risk you're asking the store to take, giving you a better chance of them giving you some shelf space.

@RubyJones I had this planned for my novella, but my social anxiety got the better of me for a while. 😕
@ashtardeza yeah, that sounds like a good plan. I'm thinking I might try it out with Synthetic Agency. I don't know that the novellas have enough shelf appeal, as the spines are too thin for them to stand out.

@ashtardeza also, yeah, SOCIAL ANXIETY 😬

But hey, I'm finally in EMDR therapy for my CPTSD and there's time to work myself up to it. There's a small local LGBTQ+ bookshop that might be interested, if I find the guts to talk to them.

@RubyJones oh yes that sounds like a good match.

I had a special A5 edition of my book printed by a POD company in the Netherlands that only does printing, and they had a whole page dedicated to how to approach bookstores. That's where I got the info from.

Unfortunately it's in Dutch, so it might not be very useful to share.

@ashtardeza that sounds very useful, though! I can always run it through a translator!

@RubyJones just checked for you, but it's behind a login.

Also doesn't allow for easy printing to pdf.

@ashtardeza fair enough - thanks for looking!
