Indie Publishing friendos:

How does one/can one approach small independent bookstores about getting one's books sold by them?

In your experience, are they open to sexy stories - I'm thinking my erotic romance novellas. And maybe the novel I have planned for next year. Like. It probably won't happen, but I've never looked into it and was wondering if anyone has experience (or a bookstore...)

@RubyJones I have a sample size of 1 but when my debut short story got published in an anthology, I asked my local indie book store (On Paper Books, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada) if they could carry it (so I could buy a copy of something I wrote at a bookstore, just a personal goal).

I was polite but persistent, and eventually they ordered some copies, so I was able to meet my goal. They even asked me to sign a few copies!

The anthology was horror, rather than erotica though, so that might make things different.

But I think independent bookstores like to carry work by local authors? It helps to make them unique and part of the community.

Before you ask, maybe visit them a few times to get their vibe, talk to their staff (usually their "staff" is the owner), see if they have books in your genre/and/or books by local authors, and let them get to know you a little bit.

I introduced myself when I bought books there, said I was an author and might have something published soon, and asked them if they could order books for me, and what that process was like.

Good luck with your writing!

(EDIT: I just saw you were asking specifically indie authors, and my story was published by a small press, so I don't know if that makes a difference. BUT don't forget your local library, too! Indie authors in my writing group have been able to get their books into our local libraries with help from the librarians, so give that a try, too!)

@quietmarc thanks, it's useful to have your perspective. I don't know whether I'll get over my anxiety to actually reach out, butnit's good to know it can work.
@RubyJones To be honest, I don't know how I got over my anxiety, either!
@RubyJones I called and asked if they carried local authors and/or self published. They said yes if it was something they thought they could sell. I brought them a stack and they put them on the shelf.
@LuciaG interesting! Thank you!

@RubyJones I haven't tried this, but apparently the best chance for success is to order a small number (like 5) of paper books yourself, then talk to the owner and come to some kind of arrangement where they pay you for every book they sell, and you take back whatever isn't sold.

This massively reduces the financial risk you're asking the store to take, giving you a better chance of them giving you some shelf space.

@RubyJones I had this planned for my novella, but my social anxiety got the better of me for a while. 😕
@ashtardeza yeah, that sounds like a good plan. I'm thinking I might try it out with Synthetic Agency. I don't know that the novellas have enough shelf appeal, as the spines are too thin for them to stand out.

@ashtardeza also, yeah, SOCIAL ANXIETY 😬

But hey, I'm finally in EMDR therapy for my CPTSD and there's time to work myself up to it. There's a small local LGBTQ+ bookshop that might be interested, if I find the guts to talk to them.

@RubyJones oh yes that sounds like a good match.

I had a special A5 edition of my book printed by a POD company in the Netherlands that only does printing, and they had a whole page dedicated to how to approach bookstores. That's where I got the info from.

Unfortunately it's in Dutch, so it might not be very useful to share.

@ashtardeza that sounds very useful, though! I can always run it through a translator!

@RubyJones just checked for you, but it's behind a login.

Also doesn't allow for easy printing to pdf.

@ashtardeza fair enough - thanks for looking!
@RubyJones I'm not a published author, but wouldn't it make sense just to ask them if they would be interested in publishing such a book, or if they publish within said genre
@dandylover1 you clearly don't have anxiety. Well done, I guess.
@RubyJones All they can do is say no. So then, you just try another.
