I vowed to make today the day I did some long overdue #ESPHome maintenance (and thereby #HomeAssistant, ...).
So what am I doing?
Preparing to make yoghurt in the #InstantPot for the first time of course!
🤦♂️

🤦♂️
Cat pics don't count. That's *not* my procrastination.
Trust me, I get told when it's play time.
Play now or the hassock gets it!
Believe it or not, I have accomplished #ESPHome stuff today. On one of the most meandering journeys of exploration taken yet
Other than making yoghurt, the journey involved installing EndeavourOS on an ancient Surface Pro 3
Which I'm sure can be seen as a perfectly logical step by everyone
Not!
But I have temperature data for the proofing cupboard now!
One #HomeAssistant automation and I'll have what I need for simple bang-bang temperature control!
But of course, I have other plans 🤦♂️
Tip: never try to debug a #HomeAssistant automation involving a smart outlet near an operating Instant Pot.
You will be driven crazy thinking the relay in the outlet is busy toggling on and off when in fact, it's the damn Instant Pot. Doing its own bang-bang thing!
🤦♂️🤦♂️
Hah!
I don't need no steenking Automations!
I need a Generic Thermostat Helper!
Boing! Done and it looks purty too!
👍👍
It's already done the job!
Now to see how often it cycles.
The default was ±0.3°C which is probably crazy tight for what I'm doing here.
But may as well see what happens.
I can see it coming now, thundering in the distance.
Next step, insulate the proofng cupboard 😂
Okay. Hold that data thought.
Remember that I had plans?
Tomorrow I introduce #HOPCAT
The Hopelessly Over-engineered Proofing Cupboard Automation Testbed
🚨🚨 You have been warned!
There's a hashtag to use however you see fit!
😂
Lovely, lovely data!
Look at that. It hit temperature and seems to be holding fairly stable without kicking the heater back on. That's been almost two hours. I can certainly live with that.
The key will be the data around 4am. That's when the house will be the coldest. It's set to 13.5°C overnight although it has to be fairly cold outside for the house to drop that far.
And with that, I need sleep.
Been up since 3am because of my stupid hip and back pain (with regular asynchronous pee trips just for additional fun).
Have a good one everybody and I am off to dream of bacterial cross contamination between my yoghurt and bacon.
Hope you sleep better than I'm likely to!
😂
Am I the only one that can procrastinate about sleeping? Likely not! There seem to be many people much too much like me around here. Rock On!
🤘🤘
Anyhoo, got more data!
I'm seeing cycles.
Or is that stars?
Drone? What drone?
<advanced delirium now well in progress>
Data!
😂
There we go. More rapid cycling now that the house is cooling down.
This is more like expected. Actually it's cycling at about what I'm willing to put up with. There may be no reason to change the tolerance unless something else comes up.
Closer look says every 20 minutes. Something to watch.
@kaybee335 with automated vents to keep it balanced!
Sorry, shouldn't give you more ideas (you probably already had them, I mean I shouldn't encourage) ;)
@j_angliss Thanks! I guess?
😂
#NoteToSelf 1 - check inventory of boxer fans
#NoteToSelf 2 - you have motors and H-bridges
#NoteToSelf 3 - you have two Peltier plates hiding somewhere 🤔
@j_angliss this is exactly why I need instrumentation! I need to know what's going on before trying to fix things!
Trust me, the drawing board is getting well covered by now. #HOPCAT has taken on a life of its own.
Despite the fact that the current implementation is working perfectly adequately from all observations right now.
😂
My proofing cupboard needs additional heat! It can't keep up with the overnight lows.
The graph shows pretty much exactly when the heat goes down in the house and the seedling heating pad goes all Scotty on me.
Time for a second pad. Take that!
