This image has been brewing in my brain since the day THE QUEEN IS DEAD was released. Kathleen Cantwell was one of the first people in our school to get it, and we laid on her bed all day, listening to it over and over, not talking, not moving, not doing anything but LISTENING.
That’s why, when people ask, “How long does it take you to draw a picture?”, I’m not joking when I say, “All my life?”
We got it at SCHOOLKIDS RECORDS in Greensboro, NC.
Kathleen was the first girl I’d met who didn’t shave her legs or mustache. She was in the dance program at UNCG.
Here is where I notice my cognitive function is misfiring, because at this point, I vividly remember people sitting on her bed with us, that I wouldn’t meet til 20 years later in NYC.
Details of memories are sharp and clear, but the timelines get all mixed up.
I remember that, when THERE IS A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT came on, even though we knew people all over the world were hearing it for the first time, it sounded like it had ALWAYS existed.
A portal to eternity.
I wanted to show you some details from this piece.
This was part of my project of reclaiming The Smiths from that guy with the hair, and giving Johnny Marr the love, honor and respect he deserves.
Hey, I just noticed that that my take on Joan of Arc looks kind of like Pearl from Steven Universe! That was a case of completely unconscious influence.

One of the things that was important for me in 2024 was actively reclaiming #TheSmiths by focusing on and embracing #JohnnyMarr's grooves more this time, instead of that guy with the hair.
