Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (1971, US)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is number 246 on The List, submitted by me (buffyleigh). This was the 2nd last art spotlight we had from Norn, published last August. This album is sadly still very relevant, the title essentially what my brain screams every day.

Since we already reposted Norn's final spotlight last weekend, this is the last one we'll be revisiting. As Norn would say, thank you for going through this process with me. 💜

1001 Other Albums

We have 2 other Grace Jones albums on the 1001 Other Albums list, both added by me, but now I wish I had added this one so that we could've had this piece by Norn on the blog! Their story on this one is super sweet but too long to include in this toot, so I'm going to include it in the reply below.

Putting on one of the Dolly albums Norn included in their Record Collection series next, to follow up that wonderfully weird "Walk the Dog" track on Big Science. And, because Dolly!!! By coincidence, I picked the Dolly album that was released the same year as Big Science.

Laurie Anderson – Big Science (1982, US)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is on number 114 on The List, submitted by arratoon. This was the fourth art spotlight we had from Norn, published last July. I'm particularly grateful for this one as I was just getting into Laurie Anderson at the time, and getting the spotlight ready cemented my Anderson fandom.

Here's what Norn had to say about this one: "When I came to NYC, I thought life was gonna be nonstop art all the time! I thought you would turn on the kitchen faucet and Laurie Anderson music would come out!" 💜

Picked this album to go on after The Velvet Underground, as it's another of the few b&w pieces in Norn's Record Collection series. I don't know if I've ever heard this band - well, collective - before, was kind of expecting industrial, not eclectic ethereal/gothic-y/dream pop stuff. And Kim Deal (on track 6)! It's a double album so I'm only part way through, but so far definitely fits the mood.

The Velvet Underground – The Velvet Underground (1969, US)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is on number 898 on The List, submitted by arratoon. This was the third art spotlight we had from Norn, published last June, a few months before the album's 55th anniversary.

Here's what Norn had to say about this one: "Many times, I've taken a vow that I would never talk to anyone who hadn't listened to The Velvet Underground at *some* point in their lives. I've always broken the vow, but it seems like a good guideline. I have no interest in "normalcy", being "accepted" or participating in mainstream culture. I LOVE being an outsider." 💜

I've been listening to some albums I've never heard before that Norn had included in their Record Collection series. I picked this one because I loved their tribute art and have always meant to get more acquainted with Sheila E's work. I've of course heard "A Love Bizarre" before, but I should've listened to the full album a long time ago as it's essentially a Prince album. And it turns 40 this year!

Kate Bush – The Dreaming (1982, UK)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is on number 576 on The List, submitted by guyjantic. This was the second art spotlight we had from Norn, published last April, and possibly my favourite of the 6. Norn also did a tribute to Hounds of Love and the Running Up That Hill single later in their Record Collection Series. 💜

From Norn's FB page, below is their description of their Record Collection series and beautiful thoughts on the importance of music in their life.

"I knew that I wanted to do a series; something where each piece would lead into the next. I had a fire under me, I didn’t want to sit around “waiting” for inspiration! These images have been stewin’ in my brainpan for almost 40 years! And I knew that it had to be a spiritual series. Both because I had to *MEAN* what I was saying and because I wanted the act *itself* to be a spiritual practice. In a way, I was designing my own Tarot. But it couldn’t be a belief system that I’d only *read* about; it had to be something that had REALLY HAPPENED TO ME. That brought me to the oracle powers of the ITunes™. The Multiverse has messages for you and one of her vehicles is the shuffle function. The Multiversal DJ may not be playing what you *want* to hear, but She’s spinnin’ what you *NEED* to hear! And I realized: MUSIC. Music has really happened to me. I don’t just *believe* in Music; I *KNOW* its real. Music has *changed* my life. I would be nowhere if I hadn’t followed the tangents and adventures that Music has sent me on. Music is so important and powerful for me, I realized if I began a series of all the records that have changed my life, I would have a project that would last me the rest of my days! I am so grateful to all these artists for the inspiration & stretching my imagination, in Life as well as Art!"

Dusty Springfield – Dusty in Memphis (1969, UK)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is on number 1007 on The List, submitted by Annaspanner. This was the first art spotlight we had from Norn, published last March, and it really showcases Norn's fantastic smile-inducing style. Until a few days ago, this was our 3rd most viewed post on the blog, now bumped down to 4th by Norn's Björk Homogenic spotlight that we looked at again yesterday. What can I say, the Internet loves Norn (and Dusty). 💜

Norn's note on this piece: "Is this one of the most perfect albums in the history of music? mmmm, could be!"
