A strange thing about Krugman's column: He doesn't mention 9/11 and, especially, the response, the Orwellian-named War on Terror, the vicious surveillance and militarized police state that arose in its aftermath.

I don't see how you can talk about Americans going from sunny optimists who feel good about our world in 1999 to the angry dystopia we now inhabit without at least mentioning that two-step, which in my view has colored everything.

@kingkaufman @dankennedy_nu You might consider writing your own l’envoi when you leave your platform of 25 years. Maybe, by the way, the response to 9/11 was crafted in the broad context of the arc of the American political history of the post WWII era.
