A strange thing about Krugman's column: He doesn't mention 9/11 and, especially, the response, the Orwellian-named War on Terror, the vicious surveillance and militarized police state that arose in its aftermath.

I don't see how you can talk about Americans going from sunny optimists who feel good about our world in 1999 to the angry dystopia we now inhabit without at least mentioning that two-step, which in my view has colored everything.

@kingkaufman Krugman alludes to 9/11, but you're right that he doesn't invoke it outright: "Back in 2002 and ’03, those of us who argued that the case for invading Iraq was fundamentally fraudulent received a lot of pushback from people refusing to believe that an American president would do such a thing. Who would say that now?"
