Interested in trying Gunpla this holiday season?

I get asked about where to start *a lot*, and so I’m super keen to help you all learn from my mistakes!

Firstly, Gunpla is different from Warhammer/miniatured and Airfix/scale models. Each Gunpla kit uses different colours of plastic, together with stickers or decals -no painting needed! They’re also push-fit and fully poseable - no glue needed either! Just a pair of nippers and a hobby knife is enough to get started.

Where to start?

There are entry grade kits that can be bought for very cheap, but they’re unsatisfying builds. Instead, I’d recommend looking at the more recent High Grade models. There’s a line based on a recent anime called “The Witch From Mercury” that I can almost universally recommend.

These kits are great value for money, very stable and poseable, but also straightforward to build. I like them a lot.

If you’re a more experienced builder, the recent Real Grade kits might be more your style.

These kits are more expensive, but you get more different colours of plastic (called ‘colour separation’ in the hobby) and the models are more complex.

Real Grade (RG) kits haven’t been around as long, but have improved massively in recent years. If you’re thinking of getting one, it’s best to look at reviews before buying.

Both RG and HG just are at the same scale - 1/144. But there are larger kits available if you want something even more impressive (and expensive).

Master Grade and Full Mechanics (MG and FM) kits are scaled at 1/100. They contain much more plastic, more colour separation, and more ‘gimmicks’ like transforming or folding wings. But many of these kits are older or have been through several versions, so research reviews before hitting that buy button.

I wouldn’t recommend MG or FM kits to a first time builder, as they’re big investments of both time and money. But the right kit can be super satisfying once you’ve got some experience.

But the pinnacle is Perfect Grade. At 1/60 scale, these models are huge in both size and detail. They also have the biggest price tag, costing hundreds of dollars, pounds, or euros.

I have not bought or built one of these kits yet, but I have my eyes on a couple of kits 🤣

@Gazimoff when RG was released, the best way I had to describe it was to say it was PG but with the 1/144 scale. I've a couple of PG (unicorn and exia) and they are amazing. I also have custom grade exia and strike freedom, but those are basically HG/MG scaled up to 1/60.

@MiLk That’s true!

BTW, that PG unicorn is currently my grail kit, especially with the LEDs installed :)

@Gazimoff I think with the release of the unicorn in 2014, the process improved a lot.
I used to work at a gaming company, and while working on one of the Gundam game for bandai, they sent a few older PG kits. They were definitely not as good as the unicorn or exia.
@MiLk @Gazimoff personally i really want the PG Char's Zaku and RX-178 despite knowing they're older and less impressive. Just cool models though
@MiLk @Gazimoff you have a good amount of haro
@aetios @Gazimoff those are collector editions! Coming from the Gundam cafe in akiba which closed a few years ago.
