So, this week we learned from the #Bluesky CEO that they are considering targeted ads and more VC investment. But, we are assured, it will only be good targeted ads, and good billionaires pumping in money. πŸ€”

Feel like we've seen this movie before. Rhymes with enkittenification. 🀷

@mastodonmigration Nobody at #bluesky wants to hear that … πŸ˜‚πŸ˜Ž
@mastodonmigration Fortunately, kittens limit their manipulation tactics to one household, whereas . . .
@mastodonmigration yep I've already deleted my #bluesky account.

@mastodonmigration Counterpoint, as the article points out, it's open source. If bsky eventually incorporates ads (still an "if" question atm) and there are users who want an ad free experience they can literally create their own feed or even their own *client* which doesn't allow them.

This isn't to say we shouldn't be skeptical of them, I didn't think they'd last 6 months w/ the T&S hurdles they had to clear, but I have to admit they've been doing more good than bad lately.

@ceremus

"...users who want an ad free experience they can literally create their own feed or even their own *client* which doesn't allow them."

Really? Like a Bluesky ad blocker? Feels like that was another scene from the same movie.

@mastodonmigration Or another *completely hypothetical* example could be something like people making 3rd party clients that included the features that were never added in the official app or web interface even though people had been begging for them for like 4 straight years...

@mastodonmigration In the mean time, I somehow have over 1.7k 'followers' there, but almost zero interactions.

I'm much happier here, and putting my energy into interacting with folks here. Mainly because we actually interact with each other here.

Editing to add: BS seems to be more about empty metrics/numbers rather than actual connection and community like many of us have been able to build here. Not that here is perfect. At all.

@mastodonmigration There are no β€œgood” billionaires. This is not Gotham. There are no rich vigilante superheroes.
Billionaires in our world became billionaires on the skulls of their victims.
@mastodonmigration

People gonna continue to believe in "good"/'benevolent" billionaires until they're in the ground because of them.
