Short thread of photos from the last few days of cycling, beginning with this photo of an obstruction on a cycle-path which I came across twice on a short delivery run to @twilwel this afternoon.
Given that I used to live in a country where they didn't maintain drainage ditches properly and which flooded regularly (partly) as a result, I don't complain too much about occasionally being inconvenienced by this work...

Why does Britain flood more readily than the Netherlands ?

In the news at the moment it seems a surprisingly large part of the UK is flooded. I've read of flooding around the Thames stretching all th...

Also from this week, photos of bicycle parts starting their journey to customers. Every parcel starts its journey by bike.

It always surprises me how much extra car traffic there is on wet days. People seem happy to wait time and time again for a green light which only lets through three cars at a time, rather than ride their bikes through what was actually quite mild weather.

Dutch Bike Bits

Tried and trusted parts for Dutch Bicycles, or bicycles that would like to be a bit more Dutch.

A couple of photos from earlier this week when I went out for an extra ride for exercise. This maintenance vehicle went no faster than 33 km/h, but it was impossible to overtake it safely because there was always someone coming in the opposite direction, or a blind corner, or a junction... So I followed it for a while before it turned off in a different direction.
Luckily, this one is electrically powered so there was no stinky exhaust. If it was one of the older models I'd have found a different route instead of breathing all the fumes.

A view from the cycle path

Why is it that people cycle more in the Netherlands than in any other country ? The answer is in the infrastructure. Long established blog with content up to the present day detailing how the infrastructure of the Netherlands makes cycling so pleasant that almost everyone cycles in this country and a higher proportion of cycle journeys are made here than anywhere else

Photos from last Sunday's recreational ride with @twilwel and @TheoZw (+ one more).
At 65 km, it was far from being one of our longer rides, but the weather was sort of mixed. It was sunny but also cold, especially when we stopped to eat lunch at a particularly chilly picnic bench made of stone, and the sun seemed to be on its way down earlier than we expected.

Oh, and one more photo.
We stopped for a moment next to this bench which had been graffiti which read "Fuck de Randstad".

I guess some people from the Northern provinces (this was in Groningen) dislike the part of the country where most Dutch people live enough to bother to make graffiti about it...
