Friend: Why do developers use mechanical keyboards?

Me: A mechanical keyboard could help developers type more quickly and more accurately.

Friend: No. Developers use mechanical keyboards to *strongly* type their code.

Me: Get out.

@nixCraft a mechanical keyboard has a greater chance of survival when hulk-smashed during a my-code-is-not-working rage attack

Developers use mechanical keyboards to strongly type their code.

@nixCraft so I guess we use a Van-de-Graaff generator to statically type our code?

@nixCraft And annoy colleagues sitting nearby with their clack-a-clack. Same as those who walk on their heels in apartments just for the benefit of the floor below
@nixCraft The Wizards learned on mechanical keyboards, and the novices learned from the Wizards. The novices became masters believing that mechanical keys are better, without ever questioning why. Now nobody believes you're a real coder unless it sounds like you've got a blender full of rocks on your desk.
@your_huckleberry
nah, that's buckling spring you're talking about
@nixCraft
@nixCraft
I learned to type on a "real" typewriter so the tactile feel and sound are as much a part of typing for me as anything.
Lack of that feedback is usually disturbing and or disruptive.
@nixCraft its so people around me can *hear* my rage as I respond to someone asking me a dumb question over Teams.
@nixCraft
Au contraire my dear,
developers use mechanical keyboards to *dynamically* type their code. 🤓
@nixCraft being one with the house of clicky clacks, where my MX Cherry Blue homies @?
@nixCraft It's not the speed of keyboard input that limits me in programming, it's my thinking 🙂
@nixCraft My mechanical keyboard is split and ortholinear and tented with screws so that anybody watching gets distracted and doesn't notice all the errors my compiler is flagging up and down the stack :3
@nixCraft rubbery hard-squishy membrane keys *shudders* I just like to know when my key has been pressed and move on to the next one.
@nixCraft I didn’t log into this site to be personally attacked.
