Random comments in the context of martial law being imposed in South Korea!

#SouthKorea and #Taiwan, among others, were brutal military dictatorships until the late 1980s. Once the #USSR became wobbly, and the #USA felt confident that they could dictate the course of events without military boots on people’s chests, both those countries got democratic regimes.

The next three decades saw the #NATO block and the Western media hyping up these countries as islands of democracy surrounded by barbarians and authoritarians.

Now the #USA feels no longer confident of dictating events across the world, #Russia and #China are reasonably strong challengers. And lo and behold, a potential dictatorship raises its head in #SouthKorea.

#Pakistan and #Bangladesh have got their own variants.

#Taiwan ought to be worried.

Irrespective of the fate of the present martial law decree in #SouthKorea, I think we will see more and more military dictatorships coming up in countries of the #GlobalSouth in the next few years.

We already see Western leaders thumping their chests and baring their teeth in open support of Israel’s #genocide of Palestinians. We will soon be seeing open proclamations of the “White Man’s Burden” by Western politicians and intellectuals and media outlets.
