Do you know of great resources (books, papers, etc.) about 'policing before police'?
I'm mainly thinking of stuff like "Hue and Cry" and community-/civic-policing...
Everything but state-police
I started to collect resources in a #Zotero group-library: https://www.zotero.org/groups/5784081/policing_before_police

Zotero is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share research.

Hi! What do you mean by policing before police? In a lot of European cities there were forms of citizen police. For example neighborhood institutions. For France you can read the book by Catherine Denys about the police in the north of France cities.
@lucasrappo Hi back! :)
Yes, I know. I phrased the question deliberately vague and open to collect as many responses as possible.
I really mean 'police' before etatism, so before/in 17th century (when talking about Europe) - you could also say: Before 'states' with 'police' as their tool existed.
@lavaeolus
For instance yes. Also her book. https://www.editions-harmattan.fr/catalogue/livre/police-et-securite-au-xviiie-siecle/60916
I'm mostly familiar with works on France.

@lucasrappo But the citations in the above paper are already a great resource:
