OpenOffice read them without a problem, saved them and then my colleagues could read them again with their inferior software.

Van Ganz@hans, @bert_hubert , same here. Once a friend working for a document for UNESCO contacted me in panic saying that Word had corrupted the document and she could not open it anymore.
I opened it in LibreOffice, saved it again in .docx, sent it to her.
She could open it, nothing was lost.
