@efi @heatherhorns_lite *recollections of a childhood spent visiting the Sierra Nevada foothills in northern California, where views of the landscape sometimes indeed were obscured by placer mine tailings, ie, big piles of dirt.

ETA: The big piles of mine tailings were (mostly) due to the mid-1800s California Gold Rush. A lot of small- & large-scale mining took place without little or no thought given to environmental considerations.
