@heatherhorns_lite the natural occluder of the common world, you could just walk over and see what is beyond, but you can never be sure it remains that way when you're not on top
it's like a forest, but instead of many trees it's one large pile of dirt

@efi @heatherhorns_lite *recollections of a childhood spent visiting the Sierra Nevada foothills in northern California, where views of the landscape sometimes indeed were obscured by placer mine tailings, ie, big piles of dirt.

ETA: The big piles of mine tailings were (mostly) due to the mid-1800s California Gold Rush. A lot of small- & large-scale mining took place without little or no thought given to environmental considerations.
