The secession is already here -- it's just not very evenly distributed.

Such a flagrant disregard for the rule of law from the incoming administration is a symptom of the fact that the union has broken, and nobody -- one particular bloc in particular -- wants to face that at all.

The polite gentlemens' truce following the civil war is broken. If you keep trying to act like a polite gentleman that the compact and union are still agreed upon, well.

Thanks for fucking us over by trying super hard to ignore reality.

The “so what are you gonna do? stop us?” attitude to the rule of law is the sign that the compact's over.

*Especially* with repeated failure and reluctance to enforce the agreement.

I don't want "the Democrats" to flail about trying to figure out "how to win the next election”.

I want to see someone, anyone, figure out "what do you do next when the union has broken?”

This administration and by extension the entire GOP -- who won! -- have already seceded.

I don't think the thing to do is to try to win the next election.

Start building what's next.

@danhon In the meantime, it'd really help if SOMEONE in the Fourth Estate pivoted from horse race coverage/press conferences to real advice for those of us on the ground trying to figure out how to weather the storm until what's next comes.
@madopal Mainstream media [sic] are invested in the game still being played and the compact still being in effect.

@danhon Yep, that's readily apparent.

Trying to figure out how they'll react when the first of them loses their seat at the table and everyone else has to pretend it didn't happen or they lose their seats.

@danhon I guess we've still got Teen Vogue for the moment.

@danhon that's our view as well. build the social structures that we want to have after the war, and also the ones that will help us survive it.
@danhon we want to note that this is explicitly outside the job of elected officials, who have taken oaths to uphold the current order. they can't even begin thinking about replacements for that order. your remarks seem to be aware of that, we just point it out because we think a lot of people haven't thought it through.
@danhon We are two countries with irreconcilable differences. I'm ready to file for divorce.

@judell It's remarkable it's lasted and worked in this way for this long.

(And acknowledging that it absolutely *hasn't* worked for vast swathes of people, on purpose)

@danhon @judell If you're talking about who it's not working for, it's worth looking at the whole picture:

23% Harris (won popular vote, lost electoral college)
23% Trump (lost popular vote, won electoral college)
<1% voted other
26% could vote but didn't
28% ineligible to vote

That's not two countries with irreconcilable differences, that's one country that's _being_ parted out by policy and policy-level actors.

@mhoye @judell It's demonstrably not working for people of color.

When I say "not working”, I mean in the very, very expansive sense.

@mhoye @danhon @mhoye True. Most people want the same things for themselves and their families. That's the ground truth we cannot see because those actors have torn apart the fabric of shared reality. I would like to believe it can be put back together, but meawhile it feels like we are effectively two different countries.

@danhon I heard someone express it as “Democrats are bringing handshakes to a gun fight.”
