Slang shading language and tooling is now a Khronos project (was an nvidia project for past umpteen years). This is exciting! GLSL seems to be frozen with no future, whereas Slang is not only actively developed, but also brings in a lot of language features that sound useful. Nice! https://shader-slang.com/blog/2024/11/20/theres-a-lot-going-on-with-slang/
There’s a lot going on with Slang!

@aras Could Slang be appropriate for Blender to adopt do you think?
@billrey I don’t know. Not very familiar with that side of blender. Maybe?

@aras @billrey

Maybe... can't tell for sure. Have to evaluate it.

@fclem @billrey It feels like "something" will eventually have to be done about Blender's GLSL codebase, since GLSL is dead/frozen (no new features, no language improvements). Alternatives would be like: either HLSL, or (now possibly) Slang.
@aras @fclem @billrey "Slang provides a compatibility module that enables the use of most GLSL intrinsic functions and GLSL’s parameter binding syntax" - so there is potentially a smoothish on-ramp for trying out Slang.
