What do you guys know about North Dakota? - Lemmy.World

My parents got divorced 2 years ago and my mom met and started dating this guy from North Dakota, U.S. We’re from Romania. Next month she’s taking me to the U.S. for the first time to spend winter vacation with her and her boyfriend. Honestly never heard of North Dakota before… seems to be a not much talked about state.

I think that’s where the president-head mountain is.
That’s South Dakota! :) Erm, that’s the extent of my knowledge about the Dakotas lol
That’s South Dakota, too? Well, then I don’t really see the point of North Dakota.
It’s to stop East Dakota falling over

Well it’s north of south Dakota and it’s not Wyoming.

But is it really a good idea to move to the US, now?

Once orange man is in office you will get deported back anyway.

I’m not looking to talk politics. Plus I don’t believe in this absurd doomerist paranoia. Deported for…? As far as I’m aware neither my mom nor I are crossing the border illegally or overstaying - abusing our visas.
Deported for not being an American.
If you genuinely believe this I’m afraid the brainwashing and fear-mongering goes both ways…
Only time will tell, but I believe that it will ends like that yeah.
If the Republicans were truly the end of democracy and the start of a dictatorship, the Dems should’ve put up an actually likeable, non-flip floppy, youngish white man with some simple policies that the average person can understand as a candidate through proper primaries without Joe ever running for reelection - and they would’ve had this in the bag stress free. But they didn’t care for probably the most important election of recent history. We have the same story going on here right now with Lasconi & Simion. Lasconi is our version of Kamala and Simion Trump, and because of USR’s (Lasconi’s party) decisions we’re probably going to end up with Simion.

The brainwashing does go both ways, with the significant caveat that brainwashed Republican voters support laws that restrict civil liberties and brainwashed democratic voters bemoan that everything is over forever and nothing will ever change while supporting laws that advance civil liberties.

they’re both irritating, but the democrats pass better laws.

Trump and his MAGA followers don’t care; if you’re not born in America, they’ll do their best to make you leave, legal or not. And the Dakotas are full of those racist assholes. Don’t trust US laws to protect you. They’ll find an excuse to deport you regardless of your legal status. It’s turning into a real shitshow here in America.

Bruh. I’m an American, living in Texas. This isn’t doomerism, this is real.

You will get detained when they start rounding people up.

You will be deported, assuming you live long enough for them to do so.

They will not care that you came in legally.

This is not being done out of concern for the American people, this is being done as a scapegoat.

You will become part of the scapegoat.

Do not come here right now. You are setting yourself up for a world of hurt.

This literally sounds like a hysterical dystopian fantasy. This is how the Republicans sounds like when they talk about the Democrats transitioning kids or aborting in the 9th month to fearmonger and gain votes. None of this is happening and no one is going to die, Jesus. I can bet on it. Literal brainwashing.
Ya know what, dude? It’s your life, not mine. I’d just recommend that you make sure you’re out of the country before Trump is inaugurated.

they’re all whiny doomsayers right now, it’s pretty irritating.

things will get worse, but the vague popular defeatism is useless tripe.

you’ll be fine on valid visas.

North Dakota is cold, it’s not a cultural hot spot, but there are tons of natural features, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fishing and all that stuff.

it is a sparsely populated state.

Thank you! Side note: if they truly believe Trump is the end of the world, they should’ve seceded when he won the election like the Southern states did when Lincoln won & settled their debts Civil War 2 style. If your ideological differences have grown so big that you can’t see eye to eye with one another and you believe the other is the Devil, you probably should break apart for everyone’s sake.

None of those feelings are accurate examples of American sentiment in the real world, but these commenters all live on the internet, so they’re parroting whatever hyperbolic thing the person next to them says.

civil war’s an outsized, extreme solution to simple problems, and I have never met a conservative who actually wants civil War.

every Trump supporter I know and have talked to is very frightened of something, covid or immigrants or some other non-issue they don’t know enough about. they’re just frightened.

in real life, both sides go to the same supermarkets and libraries, it’s just that the conservatives don’t want to anybody except themselves to have access to the libraries and supermarkets and the democrats think they can preserve public access if they can convince the conservatives that democratic laws are more fair.

selfishness vs naievete.

conservatives are selfish all the time, but democrats are only naive half the time, and they do have better laws for society as a whole.

I know Civil War is extreme; I meant it more as in if you genuinely believed people would be put into camps, enslaved, killed, etc. you’d go all out cause fuck it the worst will happen anyway. Or at the very least you’d do your best to win the election, not trying your hardest to lose. In this specific scenario the Democrats should be the ones to want Civil War (if the things they believed were true). And I agree, online vs real life sentiment is very different. If you believed what people said online Kamala would’ve won everywhere and even turned Texas and Florida blue.

got it.

Democrats want to help society and civilization as a whole, and they know civil War would only make things much worse.

anyone who wants civil War doesn’t care about the country or its people as it is.

plus, civil wars are a lot of trouble.

in real life, conservatives are afraid that somebody is going to take away their fill-in-the-blank, despite having zero evidence for that anxiety.

so they repeat whatever the crazy racist next to them says because they’re standing on the same side of the road.

Kamala was trailing in the polls the entire election season, and a lot of minorities were very upset that the democrats didn’t do more wuicker to stem the genocide in Palestine, so I’m not sure where the shock is coming from for people being surprised that she lost.

also important to note that women have so few rights in America that they’re dying in hospital parking lots with stillborn babies stuck in their wombs, so that probably didn’t help a female candidate.

also, misinformation is crazy.

The USD is as strong as it’s ever been, immigration policy finally enforced under Biden, national debt reduced, inflation from Trump’s first term has been reined in, civil rights have been reatored and expanded, but as you can tell from the internet, people don’t like optimistic facts as much as exciting emotional sound bites, accurate or not.

W bush was elected twice and that guy literally raised carcinogenic levels in public drinking water(as did trump), because he told all the frightened conservatives that the brown people were coming to get them.

didn’t even matter that they blamed a totally different country then those responsible.

Trump did the same thing and it worked again.

  • Politics are a big and very real concern right now, especially for foreign nationals.
  • The reasons or lack thereof for deportation were given to you in another comment that you dismissed as overblown.
  • The incoming administration has already made moves that indicate they intend to do exactly what multiple people have now told you they are going to do, which you also dismissed.
  • One of the largest human rights associations in the US (ACLU) has just sued the government for information on the new administration’s plans for mass roundup and deportation of non-citizens (their word, this will affect thousands of citizens as well). They certainly aren’t behaving as if this is a joke.

If you didn’t want to listen to others’ responses, you shouldn’t have wasted their time by asking.

I said I don’t want to talk politics, not that I don’t care about politics. And the question I asked wasn’t politics related in the first place, so these answers are offtopic.

Except they’re not. It’s relevant information for someone outside of the US to consider especially if intending to visit an area that rabidly supports the insanity the rest of us are bracing for.

To reiterate the very on-topic part again: As I stated, ND is a sparsely populated, blood-red state(68% voted for the felon). Most of the people living there are going to be wary (paranoid) of anyone they don’t know. They’d look at me sideways and I’m from the Midwest. Now consider what they’d think of an accent or other characteristics that label you as a foreigner…

These aren’t ravings. They are stark warnings. Keep them in mind. Or don’t, at your own peril. I’ve already said that there are well-known organizations here that are taking everything you’ve been told very seriously. Maybe you should check in with your embassy for travel advisories before making plans.

I’ve said my bit. You do you. Good luck.

As far as I’m aware neither my mom nor I are crossing the border illegally or overstaying - abusing our visas.

That doesn’t matter to the incoming administration. Not born here? Deported. Not white enough? Deported. Don’t like Trump? Believe it or not, deported.

North Dakota is probably one of the coldest states in the country during winter. I don’t know what it’s like in Romania, but be prepared. The state is also landlocked and pretty much completely flat. There are lakes to boat in during the summer which is cool but I don’t know what type of winter activities there really are unless you’re into curling.

It’s a large rural state. Not much population for how large it is.

To put that in context it has an average of 12.4 people per square mile, whereas Romania has 214 people per square mile.

Being a large state there are exceptions to the population density. I’d look at the population of whatever the nearest city to where you’re going is: …wikipedia.org/…/List_of_cities_in_North_Dakota

And compare it to cities you’re familiar with to get an idea of the size to expect. The west side of the state is dominated by oil wells, don’t know if it’s still like this but you used to see flare stacks (giant flames of venting gas) basically everywhere out there.

The winter are rough, it gets very cold due to the Polar jet stream dropping south of it. Also the majority of it is flat open plains so it’s very windy and the snow drifts really high and roads often become impassable for a while. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_North_Dakota

In my experience the people are a mixed bag just like anywhere else. Some are great some are awful. A lot of the folks I met were super into outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. I would be careful if you’re near or on a Native American Reservation. I wouldn’t wander around alone as folks tend to be less friendly to people that aren’t a part of their community, they’re a historically marginalized population and the recent oil and gas exploration hasn’t done them many favors. They also have their own system of law outside the United States Federal Government, and it can be confusing. (If you’re with someone local you’re fine.)

Lastly Romance Scams are a thing and human trafficking does happen. Before she goes off to the middle of nowhere with someone she should let someone who can contact authorities know, and give them as many details about the person including social media links and emails as possible: attorneygeneral.nd.gov/…/common-scams/

In the US you can call 911 to get emergency services anytime and anywhere. North Dakota has its own human trafficking task force: www.ndhttf.org

Thank you for an answer actually on topic! My mom has met him multiple times before (both in the US and in our country at his home and our home), so this is far from their first meeting. ~~
I’m in the US and the only two things even I know about North Dakota is it’s by the Canadian border and Dakota Fanning is named after it.
