Linus Torvalds once said ChromeOS was probably the nearest win for the Linux desktop. Now, Google plans to migrate Chrome OS fully over to Android. The reason for this shift is to better compete with the iPad and also make more effective use of development resources. Is ChromeOS as good as dead now? It seems that way. https://www.androidauthority.com/chrome-os-becoming-android-3500661/
Source: Google is turning Chrome OS into Android to compete with the iPad

A source within Google has told Android Authority that Google plans to basically turn Chrome OS into Android.

@nixCraft SteamOS is the biggest win for Linux Desktop.
@nixCraft hey but android is more like Linux now and soon we will be able to run Linux apps in terminal, so maybe it's a win after all
@jling @nixCraft if those Debian applications will be in the launcher (like Linux apps on Chrome OS) and have proper touch functionality, this might even be a win for Linux smartphones as Linux mobile applications would be accessible to more people.

@nixCraft I suspect this will be an attempt to thwart the possible outcome of the FCC's case against Google's monopoly.

Report: DOJ wants to force Google Chrome sale, Android de-bundling

Cutting off Google’s control of the world’s most popular browser may be necessary.

@nixCraft No, Google! I used Google apps for work and get great workflow out of Chrome OS. I have a cheap Chromebook I leave in the desk at work and have a thin client at home with Flex installed that I exclusively use for work. Android would be way heavier, isn't as efficient for productivity and it doesn't play as nicely as Chrome OS or iPad when connected to displays.
@nixCraft I hope they keep the Linux containers like we have on ChromeOS.
@nixCraft And once Google stops supporting it, there’ll be lots of e-waste from all those Chromebooks.
@nixCraft Ubuntu and mint continue to run well on ancient crap hardware. Glad i never fell into that corp spying OS
