I tested Threads. In my experience, this is how Threads compares to Mastodon:

— The algorithm decides if your content is visible to others. Some content gets zero exposure for reasons which are not transparent.

— Sharing links to other platforms makes the algorithm suppress your content's visibility.

— Slower to use.

— Only one app allowed, and it does not support iPads and other tablets.

— Ads are coming in early 2025.

— You cannot run your own server.

— Your data is mined by Zuckerberg.

@randahl add to this that the majority of the “users” did not actively sign up they were more or less signed up by Instagram per default.

So they might have more head cpounts compared to Bluesky or Mastodon, but the engagement and quality doesn't match a network where you actually have to take some steps to join.

I signed up for Bluesky when it was available here in DK, haven’t used it - took a look the other day and it is way better quality compared to threads (Mastodon the same)

@pbinderup I strongly dislike the short character limit on Bluesky. Also the investors have some really nasty actors among them.
@randahl
The short character limit to me is definitely Blusky's biggest weakness. It really does feel limiting sometimes.
@pbinderup

@randahl @pbinderup The character limit is a pet peeve. NO editing is another. Combine the two, it is a hassle to use as a creator. I tend to post here as a creator, repost my fediverse cross-post there. It's easier.

"add to this that the majority of the “users” did not actively sign up they were more or less signed up by Instagram per default. "

I was pretty early on Threads. You had to be on Insta, but you also had to then sign up to Threads. There was no automatic Threads sign-up I recall.

@randahl @pbinderup Re: ownership: In many ways I like Threads better than BS. But the deciding point for me now is increasingly simple: I am SO sick and tired of the Bad Billionaire model of social media. It has badly harmed Threads and the experience there.

In that regard, who are those nasty actors? That has potential for harm.
