I tested Threads. In my experience, this is how Threads compares to Mastodon:

— The algorithm decides if your content is visible to others. Some content gets zero exposure for reasons which are not transparent.

— Sharing links to other platforms makes the algorithm suppress your content's visibility.

— Slower to use.

— Only one app allowed, and it does not support iPads and other tablets.

— Ads are coming in early 2025.

— You cannot run your own server.

— Your data is mined by Zuckerberg.

@randahl I probably should not wait, but when the kiddos are done with the Oculus, I’m shutting down my Meta accounts.

I’ve never activated Threads.

@christopherbrown @randahl I was looking at #oculus but then it was acquired by #meta...

@randahl
Nothing beats #mastodon

Coming here from any other social media platform is like a breath of fresh air.

@randahl but Mastodon doesn't have an algorithm at all, and your post is visible mostly to your subscribers, so you can't get viral.
@BigCaddy I have written posts with 1000+ boosts. That is plenty enough viral for me.
@randahl they're already your subscribers.
@BigCaddy that is actually not the case. What happens on Mastodon is, followers boost your content, then their followers boost your content and follow you.
@randahl @BigCaddy Engagement feels way more organic on #Mastodon, people with genuine interest and therefore a more robust community of followers and their followers.
@randahl @BigCaddy that's what I like about masto, no shady algorithm
@BigCaddy @randahl In all honesty I consider that a good thing. I'd rather have twenty 'high quality' interactions than a big heap of ten thousand interactions of a 'low quality'.

@alterelefant @BigCaddy @randahl

...or not even real.

@clintruin @BigCaddy @randahl Yep, bots are all over the place. Less so on Mastodon because of the absence of an algorithm it takes more effort to boost content to a greater audience. Other platform with algorithm's make it easier to amplify posts due to the way the algorithm picks up on 'trending' topics and posts.
@clintruin @BigCaddy @randahl Making it easier for a bot farm to coordinate a campaign that will trick the algorithm resuling in non organic amplification.
@BigCaddy you won't make people with near 10k followers like @randahl realize how hard it is to get viral on Mastodon, they have a different experience here
@BigCaddy @randahl This just isn't true. Every single day toots with 100+ boosts appear in my feed just because enough people found them good enough to boost. That's virality.
@BigCaddy Ah yes .. the mighty algorithm that on xwitter forces one, by default to the "For you" tab..
Really!!.. nah not for me all the cr4p that elony_musky_thingy forces upon one.
The boost methid works for me,
@BigCaddy @randahl I’ve had several posts that have received many hundreds of boosts, with the vast majority being from people that have no connection with me. People that follow me boost a post, then people that follow them (but not me) also boost it. And then you just have to hope that not too many reply guys show up. This happened to me once on Twitter, but several times here.
@BigCaddy @randahl viral posts happened well before algorithmic interference, thanks to people simply sharing the posts they liked. It's a social phenomenon of people seeing posts and going "omg, y'all gotta see this", not an algorithmic one.

@randahl add to this that the majority of the “users” did not actively sign up they were more or less signed up by Instagram per default.

So they might have more head cpounts compared to Bluesky or Mastodon, but the engagement and quality doesn't match a network where you actually have to take some steps to join.

I signed up for Bluesky when it was available here in DK, haven’t used it - took a look the other day and it is way better quality compared to threads (Mastodon the same)

@pbinderup I strongly dislike the short character limit on Bluesky. Also the investors have some really nasty actors among them.
@randahl
The short character limit to me is definitely Blusky's biggest weakness. It really does feel limiting sometimes.
@pbinderup

@randahl @pbinderup The character limit is a pet peeve. NO editing is another. Combine the two, it is a hassle to use as a creator. I tend to post here as a creator, repost my fediverse cross-post there. It's easier.

"add to this that the majority of the “users” did not actively sign up they were more or less signed up by Instagram per default. "

I was pretty early on Threads. You had to be on Insta, but you also had to then sign up to Threads. There was no automatic Threads sign-up I recall.

@randahl @pbinderup Re: ownership: In many ways I like Threads better than BS. But the deciding point for me now is increasingly simple: I am SO sick and tired of the Bad Billionaire model of social media. It has badly harmed Threads and the experience there.

In that regard, who are those nasty actors? That has potential for harm.

@randahl Yep, totally sucks then, and I'm guessing accessibility with screenreaders won't even be there.
@randahl
Naw
I'll pass on letting the Zuckster mine my data

»Sharing links to other platforms makes the algorithm suppress your content's visibility.«

Absolute no go for me.

I will not participate in a platform that stirs up controversy by incentivizing users to simply throw unsubstantiated personal opinions at each other.

@oliver_schafeld They're just trying to give users the real (pre-community notes) Twitter experience
@randahl And a lot of the posts are engineered for visibility, people are 'building their audience'. Doesn't feel very authentic overall.
@randahl So it’s still just basically Twitter 2.0?
@randahl Huh, I would pay good money for Zuck to have to look at my data personally.
@randahl what else did you expect from #NSAbook?
@randahl Threads is a very weird platform to navigate. It's hard to explore topics or find out what's going on in the world. I guess it's good because I can't see myself getting addicted to a platform that shows me the same content over and over.

@randahl

I do not need algorithms taking decisions that should be mine. No thanks, indeed.

I’d rather by think myself, than being influenced and manipulated.

@randahl I registered, took one look and walked away, there and then.
@randahl I won't support ANY Meta site of any kind. I like Mastodon because it is truly distributed and there's no algorithm. It does take some effort on the part of the user, but the engagement is honest and real. TY for sharing as always.
@randahl
I was on it briefly. Had to deal with nutters within a week. Closed my account.
@randahl
Bluesky seems okay but it's owned by one if Steve Bannon's pals.
@randahl Zuckerberg's prison. Avoid.
@randahl After seeing what they did to Facebook and Instagram, I can't be bothered to try Threads. Their 'smart' algorithms completely killed any friend to friend engagement on these platforms.

@randahl Always reminds me of small intestinal worms...

#threads

@randahl Anything with an "algorithm" is a hard pass for me.
@randahl And that's why I never joined threads.
@randahl Only issue is threads DOESN'T compare to Mastodon.
Mastodon hovers around the 1 million MAU
Threads is on about 280 million MAU and rising fast, Mastodon is actually decreasing slightly.
I'm afraid that the numbers don't really lie when a platform has almost 300 times the numbers it is a bit unkind to compare them
@randahl
May as well be Facebook. Left Twitter to come here. It was my voice to power. May as well go back to talk back radio. 😡👎👎

@randahl Exactly right. I share a link to my short stories on my own site and I get far, far less engagement. The trick there is to pin new stories to your profile (you can have only one pin) and then to engage with others on their posts. When people check out your profile, those interested will click on the pinned link.

I hear that's not the case for "verified" accounts.

@randahl bsky is the trending one so...
@randahl we've gotten spoiled by Mastodon.
@randahl I would like to thank you for saving me the trouble. Sounds dreadful.
@randahl My first thought was "but it's still Zuckerberg." and then you said it.
@randahl Your Threads post got caught in my filter, and it literally describes Threads, perfectly.
