I would rather see Bluesky replace Twitter than give the field to Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp/Threads, but until Bluesky keeps its promises re decentralization I don't trust it, either. I'll post some stuff there but I won't move away from here.
@dangillmor Look up Bluesky's new investors, and see how buddy-buddy they are with Musk...
@dangillmor agreed, I hear people saying it's easy to move because it's "like Twitter". Hard to see that as a good thing..
@dangillmor Their recent series A $15 million round was led by Blockchain Capital. So, even though Dorsey is reportedly 100% out of the picture, that investment doesn’t give me a lot of hope.
@dangillmor This is the only place I will see your posts, and I appreciate it !
@dangillmor same, that tech bro hedge fund investment, then Jack Dorsey leaving the Bluesky board - it reeks of being monetized and even politicized like Twitter
@dangillmor I have a lot of thoughts about Bluesky's so called "decentralization". What I'll say here is that just because something *can* be decentralized, doesn't mean it will be. This would require quite a bit of adoption, and the types of people uniquely interested in standing up decentralized nodes are the same people weary of bluesky being VC-backed. That, plus running all the component parts of Blueskys infra seems to be quite expensive. This is also crippling to a decentralized future
@dangillmor Why BlueSky Isn’t the Alternative to X (Formerly Twitter) You’re Looking For — and Why Mastodon Is the Better Choice Over X, Threads, and BlueSky https://aidanraymond.medium.com/why-bluesky-isnt-the-alternative-to-x-formerly-twitter-you-re-looking-for-and-why-mastodon-is-46c8901f2748
Why BlueSky Isn’t the Alternative to X (Formerly Twitter) You’re Looking For — and Why Mastodon Is the Better Choice Over X, Threads, and BlueSky

As the world looks for alternatives to X (formerly Twitter), platforms like BlueSky and Threads are often highlighted as contenders. However, beneath their appealing facades, both platforms have…

@dangillmor

your skepticism is well-placed.

crypto / blockchain investors are beyond problematic. and friends of Steve Bannon are not friends of mine.

very stretched to locate Palestinian content on Bluesky which makes me wonder.. I have stared following people this past few days, mostly academics but I really cannot handle any more far roish.'
This is the friendliest platform, by far the nicest..

@dangillmor blewski is a #DTBO

Billionaire douchebag *crypto* techbros own it.

It's xitter, couple months before musk took over, no better.

It's not an "if", it's a "when".

Why bother?

Bluesky is already decentralized, just not in the same way as ActivityPub. Here’s a great interview with @jay.bsky.team explaining a lot of it. www.theverge.com/2024/3/25/24...

@dangillmor my two cents..
mastodon Is still the way to go.. the less we talk about It, the Better we stay!
"Social fight club"..
@dangillmor this week's growth issues go to show that Bluesky should have some more sites. I can see now why Mastodon's creator was closing new registrations on the main instance, to try force users to sign up at other servers. I'm hoping we will see "how to host your own Bluesky instance" videos soon.
@dangillmor No need to limit ourselves to one platform.
@dangillmor @wendinoakland Yeah, I’m sticking with Mastodon. The smart, kind, caring, genuine people are here.
@dangillmor even if it didn't have less than desirable ownership, it's still going to go the same way as Twitter. It's a carbon copy in how it's structured, and how posts generate traffic. The tools the bots, trolls and hidden parties used to create clicks in Twitter are now well established. Through rage bait and misinformation, they manipulated the algorithm that promotes engagement. The tools were made for Twitter, but they'll work just as well in Threads and Bluesky.

Stop comparing Mastodon and Threads/Bluesky. It's a category mistake.: https://ianjs.com/2024/11/15/stop-comparing-mastodon.html
