I rejoined Mastodon in 2022 and immediately loved it because it felt like the old Internet. As a direct result I have now bought an old Nokia dumb phone and am getting curious about ham radio. If this trend continues by 2026 I will be communicating exclusively in petroglyphs.
@afewbugs I was thinking of switching to carrier pigeons or building a semaphore platform
@wlukewindsor @afewbugs so we're setting up the clacks towers then?
@mensrea @afewbugs I had to google that but yes!
@wlukewindsor @afewbugs well, first you need to go read Going Postal. it's very important
@mensrea @afewbugs itโ€™s a big gap in my reading
@afewbugs Ham Radio Mastodon is full of weirdos. Nice weirdos.

@afewbugs

I'm selling a penny-farthing if you're interested.

@afewbugs

You exaggerate. USENET and telegraphs will add at least half a decade to that process.

@suetanvil @afewbugs I agree, the progression would be more like linotype press, standard press, gutenberg press, hand copied texts, scrolls and papyrus, pressed clay documents, then after many more years of progress, petroglyphs might start to show up.
@afewbugs I have an old Nokia flip phone that I saved. It's looking mighty fine these days.
@afewbugs I just read about a 31-year-old who still uses Nokia 3310, it's the only phone she has ever had ๐Ÿ˜€
@afewbugs same here. I'm learning about ham radio too ๐Ÿ˜‰
@afewbugs I'll keep my smartphones AND my ham radios. I even have a smartphone that is also a ham radio.

@afewbugs Drums. Get some drums. Listen for the latest news to arrive via drums.
@afewbugs Yes but ham radio ops have built satellites and use those as well. ;)
@afewbugs wait, you've skipped over the Bell 103 phase...
@afewbugs and if we can solve the forum bot spam problem, maybe we can advance back to forums, one of the best social media tools I've ever seen on the internet, fantastic way to build searchable free knowledge-bases. collect communities of people really into the topic area. Still with us, hydrogenaudio, candlepower forums, still the best resources out there. But revitalizing free and open information sharing fully requires cutting the tether/cord with the stack* and reddit properties.
@afewbugs YES i LOVE the old internet!
@afewbugs About half the time, I'm posting here from an Apple IIgs.
@afewbugs it does feel like the old internet, doesn't it?
@afewbugs now I want to hook a ticker tape printer up to my fediverse feed.

Reading my socials like a financier on the eve of the great depression. #doomscrolling
