OpenStreetMap is the premier source of open geo data, allowing you to take control of your maps. Rather than relying on a handful of tech corporations based in USA, you can host your own maps.

Why not switch away from the handful of US tech companies, to your own maps today? 🙂

@openstreetmap
I spent part of my walk yesterday updating and confirming details for OSM using Street Complete. It's a fun activity, although it must look a bit dodgy from an outsiders perspective.
@DodoTheDev @openstreetmap Have you found "Every Door" yet? ;-)
@derickr @openstreetmap
Yes, I've tried that too.
@DodoTheDev @openstreetmap It's addictive, isn't it? 😄
@derickr @openstreetmap
Almost too addictive. It's like Pokémon Go, but useful 🤣
@DodoTheDev @derickr @openstreetmap Ironically, given PoGo uses OSM data, you're doing an addictive OSM-based thing in service of another! 😂
@mattcen @derickr @openstreetmap
Oh wow, does it? That's pretty cool. Don't get me wrong, I like PoGo, but it's not as constructive as SC.

"many *Pokémon Go* players have edited OpenStreetMap in an attempt to improve their gameplay"
Pokémon Go - OpenStreetMap Wiki

@mattcen Some people wanted to fix the PoGo maps, and found OSM and got hoooked on that instead 🤣

There's even an OSM Wiki page:

Tips for new (Pokemon Go) mappers - OpenStreetMap Wiki

@DodoTheDev
Some places have meetup groups who do it as a joint activity. Great way to get a walk in and make the world a better and more decentralized place.

PS. Thanks for the tip on Street Complete, I had not heard of it.
@openstreetmap

@enmodo @openstreetmap

I'll keep my eye out for a local group .

@openstreetmap I like the idea of an open street map, but my primary concern is geo accuracy.

Thus far, Google Maps is the best for where I travel.

@darnell @openstreetmap
Not disputing your experience at all, it could be exactly the case - but it reminded me of this thread where I compare OSM to GMaps whenever I accidentally take a look at GMaps :)

https://mastodon.social/@richlv/111493490136535808

@richlv @darnell @openstreetmap most areas are not as well mapped as gmaps yet sadly

@eatham @richlv @darnell @openstreetmap Can we agree on "It depends" 🤷‍♂️

There are domains where Google Maps is best-in-class (real-time traffic, streetview, car routing, North American or European cities).

And there are domains where there's less of an incentive for big tech to pour money in and where OpenStreetMap shines (biking infrastructure, less populated areas, countries that are not a priority for big tech).

@djh @eatham @darnell @openstreetmap
In European cities it's "depends", isn't it?

The POI data goes both directions (as covered in my thread a bit as well).
As for most other detail in cities, GMaps are surprisingly bad. Not terrible, but compared to OSM, eww.

@djh @richlv @darnell @openstreetmap Yeah sure. And regarding bike directions, gmaps tries to get me to kill myself my riding backwards on a highway into the traffic, so osm is better by default there.
@darnell @openstreetmap short term v long term goals i guess 🤷‍♂️
@darnell @openstreetmap Organic Maps has worked very well for me so far. Check it out if you want! https://organicmaps.app/
Organic Maps: Offline Hike, Bike, Trails and Navigation

Free, open-source, fast, privacy-focused, detailed offline maps for travelers, tourists, drivers, hikers and cyclists created by MapsWithMe/Maps.Me app founders

@darnell @openstreetmap I like the idea of geo accuracy, but my primary concern is transit route planning, and for that I need the actual raw data of the map.

Turns out, for geo accuracy, paying a guy to work on OSM in our city works very well.

If you liked this shitpost and want to work on Reittiopas in Helsinki, come work for me.

@openstreetmap
For car navigation: I need information about traffic jams and construction sites, and lane guidance's very useful, too. Also, most of the OSM apps managed to find courses that were even worse than the early TomTom versions that preferred farm tracks.

For "what's nearby" (restaurants, ATMs, ...): Sometimes not up to date, and with the apps I tried, I often struggled to find a zoom factor that doesn't either clutter the map with icons or showed almost nothing. And Google shows a lot more information, like reviews, opening hours, website, phone, ... (Yes, some of it is available in OSM, if someone bothered to enter it.)
@openstreetmap
I've been using #OSM pretty much exclusively traveling in eastern Europe and the Balkans the past couple of months. Works great offline which is crucial for me.
@openstreetmap my current issue in getting people to switch is android auto. Currently, I don't know of any osm android foss client that supports AA without google play services. So even if you use osm, you still need to use google.
@tony Is Google play a requirement for connecting to AA? Last summer we rented a car and toured southern England. We used AA all the time via #OsmAnd and apart for some minor bugs it worked fine. I have Google play on my phone though. @openstreetmap
@MrManor @openstreetmap Not technically a requirement, but you need Googel Play to purchase the OSMAnd version that supports AA, so, yeah, it should work for you. Not me, unfortunately, since I only use microG.
@tony I see, that was the reason it worked for us. Thanks for the clarification. @openstreetmap
