Hmm. Intriguing;

Cool concept. This seems like an Avaaz for citizens of Israel. Does Lobby99 have similar rules to Avaaz about not accepting donations from corporations or foundations, and capping donations from individuals?

@tzafrir This is cool. Thanks for posting about it.

Now I'm wondering if our local equivalent, ActionStation.org.nz has the same funding policy. Or whether its a front for neoliberal Foundations, like MoveOn.org.

Must find out ...

"ActionStation is funded by member donations, major donations and grants."

Well that answers that question. One of the donors is the Omidyar network, a reputation laundering operation akin to the Atlas Network;

"Established in 2004 by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam, Omidyar Network has committed over US$1.5 billion to nonprofit organizations and for-profit companies across multiple investment areas."

I wonder how we'd go about setting up a kiwi equivalent of Lobby99. Any ideas?

@strypey I don't know New Zealand well. I suppose you have to jump-start it somehow.

In Israel it started following some public outrage over a certain incident yhat showed lobbyists as too powerful and manipulative.

They were also lucky to have the right people and managed to have an early success that allowed them to turn a one-time crowd sourcing to the current platform.

Another #ActionStation donor is described as;

"OPEN, an international sisterhood of organisations similar to ActionStation working to enable citizens to take action on and offline"

This links to a "website" that displays nothing but a graphic of people with their hands up;

https://www.the-open.net/

Unless I allow them to run JavaScript on my device. But even allowing their domain to serve scripts, I still get nothing but hands. To make the page display, I have to allow scripts from actblue.com and squarespace.com and typekit.com.

This is not a website. It's a jsite.

The Online Progressive Engagement Network (OPEN)

We connect and support a global sisterhood of national grassroots campaigning organisations.

OPEN Website (Alpha Version)

What is ActBlue.com, that the OPEN website is pulling scripts from? It describes itself as;

"Powering Democratic candidates & progressive causes across the country."

https://actblue.com/

In other words, in a few minutes of casually following links (and using NoScipt), I've proved to my own satisfaction that ActionStation is like MoveOn.org, an AstroTurf group backed by the US Democratic party.

Disappointing but not particularly surprising.
