I should make a portable mp3 player that only plays them off floppy disks.

I mean, technically that already exists (at least twice) but nothing that uses 3.5" floppy disks

@foone Bonus points if you build it in a Mavica shell.
@julie oh that'd be fun. I'd have to destroy a Mavica to make it though, and I don't know if I could handle that, emotionally. They're my favorite brand of camera!
@foone @julie maybe if you can find one with a broken camera mechanism

@foone @julie

ebay's got a bunch that are "parts only"

@foone the mavica of digital audio players

@foone I think a 2 minute 128 kbps mp3 can only fit in a floppy disk, assuming it is 2.88M. A couple 3 minute 64 or 48 kbps mp3s can fit in that.

It would be cool tho

@Spikyyn yeah there's a whole mini-industry of putting mp3s on floppies, that's not the hard part:

Flop rock: inside the underground floppy disk music scene

Floppy disks are slowly dying out, but a DIY music scene is still thriving on platforms like Discogs and Bandcamp.

@foone I've been eying one of those MIDI floppy players...it'd be cool if they were portable.
@ann3nova oh yeah they're nice. I've got one. I never considered it but it wouldn't be too hard to convert it to run off batteries, I'm sure!
@foone I thought you did already? or was that just a usb floppy drive connected to a car stereo or something?
@ilmari yeah. I regularly plug USB floppy drives into things to see if they'll support floppy disks
Upcycled 3.5" Floppy Drive - Sony MPF-920 or Compatible

Before SSDs or USB keys or email attachments or SD cards or even CD-ROMs, there was the mighty floppy disk! These lil guys could store about a megabyte or so of files in their cool square ...

@foone Does a USB floppy drive plugged into the radio of a 2015 Kia Soul count? I mean, technically it is portable!
@foone It's be awesome if it could also play MIDs and MODs.
A floppy-disk Walkman - using a Raspberry Pi

I have built the most inconvenient way of playing music! It is lo-fi awfulness and cyberpunk grungy. Thanks! I hate it! Ingredients Raspberry Pi USB floppy drive Audio Cable / Headphones USB Battery WHY?!?! As I discussed yesterday, it's possible to fit half an hour of speech on a single floppy disk. @Edent @foone one of my great grandmothers had a record player in her car. I am pretty sure that that is more inconvenient unless you have really soft tyres.

Still, well bloody done!

Needs a good name.

The Eden FlopMan.

@foone can you fit a mp3 on a 3.5" floppy disk?
@gkrnours easily. just not a very long one or one with a high quality bitrate
