@topher System 7 for me was the sweet spot aesthetically, albeit crashy. I also found it very useful to color the files and folders, as another way of organizing everything, which you cannot do anymore.

I really liked systems 8 and 9, and also the Panther through Snow Leopard (I'd maybe even stretch as far as Lion) era. After that, making things progressively more iPhone-like made them increasingly dreadful for me. The anti-skeuomorphism trend post-Mavericks was a terrible move, and the more recent one beginning in the Big Sur area is just awful. The text legibility is terrible throughout and it's impossible to tell what's a clickable button or element, which are only minimally improved, if at all, by the available accessibility options. I really don't understand how people use and are productive with this modern stuff...

@topher They probably wanted to go for a look as different as possible from Windows, I'm guessing. No matter how they could have themed the buttons and other UI elements, there's nothing more drastic than making them no-longer look like buttons and so on. Fortunately, all fashions are temporary, and it's just a matter of time until the old way comes back into fashion.
