In U.S. v. Skrmetti, the case about tennessee's gender affirming care ban, the DOJ is arguing that the Equal Protection Clause protects trans people, including trans kids seeking gender affirming care.

I've seen people saying on social media that Dems don't care about trans rights. Or that Kamala Harris doesn't care. While Democrats could be doing better— including talking about the landmark argument that the equal protection clause protects trans —they're not doing nothing! #scotus #uspol

When I posted this toot yesterday (it's gonna take a while to get used to using the word toot) I hadn't even yet read the horseshit that the nation published yesterday. Mylanta.

there are so many factual errors in this piece— starting with the case name—it's embarrassing that the editors over there published it https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/kamala-harris-trans-rights-platform/

The Harris Campaign Has Offered Trans People Almost Nothing

Harris has been virtually silent on trans rights, and her policies would disproportionately benefit well-off trans people.

The Nation

Also, the Biden administration is currently being blocked from enforcing new title IX rules that protect trans students. If Trump wins, Title IX won’t protect trans students anymore. They’ll just write new rules.

It’s so incredibly dangerous for people to be spreading the lie that the Biden administration is doing nothing for trans people.

And while trans people may not be put in physical detention camps, many will be forced to detransition. In my view that’s a form of genocide. YMMV

I agree with everyone saying that the BIden administration isn’t doing enough. I disagree that they are doing nothing or next to nothing. And I vehemently oppose any claim that Trump and Harris are the same.

I think they need to quit running scared from banning discrimination against trans women in women’s sports in Title IX regs. I think Harris needs to use the power of the bully pulpit to advocate strongly for trans rights. I think the Biden admin should be making a big deal of the fact that…

they are making a landmark argument this Supreme Court term that trans people are a protected class under the equal protection clause.

They are running scared from trans issues and from an electoral standpoint, that doesn’t make sense since there’s no evidence trans panic wins votes.

From a moral standpoint, it’s abhorrent.

And Democrats writ large… looking at you Colin Allred… need to quit playing into the “boys playing sports” horseshit.

That said, the biden admin isn’t doing nothing.

@AngryBlackLady Dems specialize in timorous support. For years they did that with abortion - the whole, oh, I'm creeped out by this too but sometimes it's necessary (which let Republicans continually move the Overton window) - instead of the current "abortion care is healthcare" approach, which has proved popular.

But Dems don't learn, so their approach to trans issues is, once again, well, we don't love it either folks, but our whole brand is equality so we're stuck with it.

@AngryBlackLady yay! So happy you’re here!!
@AngryBlackLady Passports need to be obtained.
@AngryBlackLady
Forced detransitions sounds pretty close to what was done to Alan Turing, and will very predictably lead to the same end. The cruelty is the point.
@Gurre @AngryBlackLady strictly speaking what happened to him was the inverse, but of course the outcome is the same, and sadly well documented…
@AngryBlackLady physical detention camps aren't off the table, either.

@AngryBlackLady

Im kinda confused, as much as I would love title IX to protect trans people, it doesnt. That is in fact one of the big arguments, that trans people should be included in the protected classes from title IX by updating the amendment because currently it does not.

How can you block a law from being used in a way the law isnt used for, thats not blocking, thats just enforcing what the law actually says.. blocking would be if they tried to fix the amendment to include transpeople, as it should, and they said no.

Note, Biden has made no proposal to anyone to actually amend title IX to include trans people... which is what we should be mad at, Biden not proposing that or pushing for it, as that is what he should be doing.

@freemo I think you might be confusing title IX with something else maybe. The Biden administration wrote new regulations in April https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna149855

@AngryBlackLady You're more familiar with this world than I am, so I was wondering: Do you think these sorts of inaccurate stories are the results of lazy editing and people not caring, part of an actual agenda, some mix of both, or...?
@heretical_ramza I wish I knew. I think some people are lazy. Others are nefarious.

@AngryBlackLady @heretical_ramza sometime ignorance and apathy can masquerade as maliciousness. And I think when dealing with topics like this, it can be a conscious or unconscious choice.

But the pain of the end result makes it a bit unimportant, ish. (not fully but in some ways)

@MsHearthWitch @AngryBlackLady oh agreed! I always just wonder which it is - not sure it makes a difference, although I suppose carelessness might be easier to correct than some sort of bad intent.
@heretical_ramza also hiiiii
@AngryBlackLady Hiiii! Work is boring and I wish I wasn't here lol!

@AngryBlackLady The good news is, you really don't have to say "toot"!

Do you still refer to posts on Mastodon as "toots"? #mastodon #poll #toots #SocialMedia [ ] Yes! [ ] Sometimes [ ] Not really [ ] Never did

Stefan's Personal Mastodon Server
@AngryBlackLady Mastodon has been my main social media since the weirdo bought the sink through the front door. It’s been my observation that ‘toot’ has never caught on. There *is* a funny subgenre of post that (unseriously) tries to invent another term, though.
@AngryBlackLady You could just say, "when I linked to this yesterday" or something, and ignore the concept of "toot". Some mastodon instances have edited the source code so that word doesn't appear related to posting on the service. It's not a universal constant in the Fediverse.
@AngryBlackLady I just call them posts, and since twitter decided they're xitter where the x is prounounced sh, I feel like we could reclaim tweets and call x posts shits

@AngryBlackLady

lol they're all tweets to me 🤷‍♀️

@AngryBlackLady The Nation has a very disturbing relationship with the Kremlin going back like 30 or 40 years. The publisher's (now deceased) husband touted Kremlin talking points for years. And their track record of covering Russia, when seen as a sum total, is troubling.
@AngryBlackLady I've been on Mastodon since 2017 and I don't call them toots. "Posts" is fine.
@AngryBlackLady Of course if you want to use "toots" that's fine too!
@dgoldsmith @AngryBlackLady Can't call 'em sharts unless posts are toots. 🤪
@AngryBlackLady The only people I have ever seen use terms like "trans bourgeoisie" are massive transphobes. This article reads like a bigot masquerading as an "ally" to discourage their opponents from voting.
