#TTRPGQuestionOfTheDay

Do you have a preferred method for outcome resolution? Do you like rolling a single D20 like D&D, 3 six sided dice and roll under, like GURPS, or one of the many die poll systems like WEG, Shadowrun, or World of Darkness, diceless mechanics, or something else entirely?

What about that system do you like and is there anything you don't like about it?

I think the system I like the most from a macroscopic perspective is Earthdawn. It's "Step" system is what introduced me to the idea of "exploding" dice and I really like how the system and it lore and world-building all tie together into a cohesive whole.

More recently though I've really liked how Deadlands evolved and simplified itself into Savage Worlds, which a system that's great at offering "crunch" when you want it but is also great about getting out of the way when you don't.

I love Exalted's "stunt" system which mechanically rewards players for being creative and engaged and have shamlessly brought it into every game I have run in any system since I encountered it.

@DopeGhoti I'm not familiar with Earthdawn and I have the older edition of Deadlands. I got to try Savage Worlds once, and it was not for me, but I don't begrudge anyone who enjoys it!

Exalted's stunts sounds similar to how Feng Shui described action scenes. They pushed for style and flair to emulate action movie scenes, and I've tried to embrace that and bring it into other games. It does add a lot to a session and I really enjoy adding a lot of flourish to describing scenes.

It's also great for keeping players engaged. I also like the idea of rewarding players for creative use of scenery. With Stunts, "swing in on the chandelier and drop on the enemy from above" is cool, and gets a nominal bonus. In other systems what would have been an attack is now made harder with a Dex or Athletics check, so such creativity is discouraged and I don't like that.
@DopeGhoti Exactly! It makes the players think about the environment in different ways and feel like big damn heroes! I even brought that into games like Castles & Crusades and Pathfinder without much effort.
