Google's plan to disable the best ad/tracker/spyware blocker in Chrome is imminent: https://www.techradar.com/computing/chrome/google-looks-to-be-fully-shutting-down-unsupported-extensions-and-ad-blockers-in-chrome-which-might-push-some-folks-to-switch-to-firefox

I use Firefox and you probably should, too.

Google looks to be fully shutting down unsupported extensions and ad blockers in Chrome – which might push some folks to switch to Firefox

Manifesting a future where Firefox is more successful?

@dangillmor

I have used Firefox exclusively since ... well, since Firefox was born out of the ashes of Netscape.

However, they are unfortunately going down the road of #e14n, becoming an #advertising company and adding, well, advertising crap to Firefox, and turning it on by default.

I can see a switch away from Firefox in the not-too-distant-future, if management there doesn't come to its senses soon.

@cazabon @dangillmor What, if anything, did you switch to? I recently started using two Firefox-derived browsers, LibreWolf on Windows and Waterfox on Android. I had to change a couple of settings on the former, and the latter doesn't work well with 1Password, but overall I'm happy.

I found your post since I recently came across the #E14n hashtag (I was very familiar with enshittification, but not the abbreviation).

@mweston

I'm still using Firefox on Linux as my main browser. I haven't switched - yet. Using any of the various rebuilds of Firefox isn't great even as a bandaid solution - lots has been written about this, if you're interested. Using anything derived from Chromium is dubious because of who effectively owns / controls it, although I keep a build of Chromium and another of Vivaldi around for those sites that only work with "Chrome".

I want a browser that cannot (not just "has not yet") be enshittified against the interests of its users because it is controlled by a for-profit corporation. That leaves Firefox, which Mozilla has been doing dumb e14n-like things to for years, and the former Mozilla project Servo, which isn't a full browser - at least not yet.

Note I'm discounting things like Dillo that don't work with many sites.
