My mum wants to join the #Fediverse - as she's fed up with adverts in other social media - and I have no idea what server would be best for her.

She's in her seventies, likes gardening, outdoors, cats and dogs, travel, books..

Any suggestions?

@AdamBishop some friends are over on cupoftea.social which may be a nice fit? 😊 No idea if it will appeal to her... Just the first one that came to mind.
The beige one I am on is fantastic as well, but we may be a cult... πŸ˜‡ We do get a great admin who provides us with many chars... πŸ˜‰
@PixysJourney πŸ˜„ Ooo, thank you, I'll check them out πŸ™

@AdamBishop you're very welcome! Beige may not be a right fit, or maybe she's as "nutty" as we are and would love to join the "not a cult". πŸ˜‰ But seeing my friends on cupoftea.social made me think that could be a nice fit. 😊

Edit: saw a typo

@PixysJourney "Not a cult" LOL πŸ˜…
@AdamBishop nope. Definitely not! We deny all rumors... πŸ˜‡
@PixysJourney @AdamBishop I really should know better, but after a year+ I can’t figure it out. Is there a way I can see a timeline or feed of ONLY the accounts I follow ? Is there a particular app that allows this?
@Millicent @AdamBishop I use Tusky and the home time line gives me all the toots and boosts of the accounts that I follow. I can switch to the instance TL or the federated TL to see the rest.
Tusky is for android, so if you're on iOS, I think Mona is a good one? But I don't know if that is a free to use app.
But as far as I know, if you follow people, the home TL should be their toots and boosts. 😊 Hope this helps.

@AdamBishop

Set her up with any of the smaller established instances (= better moderation) and give her a bunch of hashtags to follow. From them, she should be able to work out which accounts to follow as well.

@AdamBishop cupoftea.social is very friendly
@cachondo Thanks, will check it out! πŸ™β˜•

@AdamBishop

Maybe sunny.garden? Despite the name, it isn't a gardening one :-) but from my experience so far, it seems like a well-moderated & friendly place. (I have a book-review alt there, @booktrail)

@unchartedworlds @booktrail Nice, I'll take a look-see πŸ™
@AdamBishop From what I've seen of people I follow there, sunny.garden seems like it could be a good match.
@AdamBishop weirder.earth comes to mind. Such posts seem to fit comfortably on zirk.us, too.
CupOfTea.Social

A Small Community Mastodon Server for Casual Chit-Chat. UK Based, A place for good and wholesome content open to everyone. Pets, Photos, Music & Food are popular topics.

Mastodon hosted on cupoftea.social
@AdamBishop why not just have her join mastodon.social? She'll definitely find some of her people there while she builds connections and gets oriented. If she finds a smaller server she likes, she can move there later.

@brakeoutgaming @AdamBishop
I would agree with this. It is the largest instance so will give her a view of most of what fediverse has, both good and bad.

I guess let her know in advance to expect that, and be ready to help her with filters and hashtag following.

When she knows her way around more, she can research into other instances in the niches that interest her.

@AdamBishop I’m new here as well and just picked one of the defaults. Should it matter since it’s all Federated? Genuinely curious.
@AdamBishop realistically, you should set up a family server on masto.host and give her an account there.
@evan Yes, good idea too. Currently quite a bargain at 6$ a month for the basic plan. I have no experience self-hosting a Mastodon instance, but there's one way to get it!

@AdamBishop masto host is really a good service provider. We have used them for 6 years, maybe 7 without any issues.

You will need to help her populate her feed, as it is very difficult to get content federated to a single instance

@AdamBishop Is fedi some guy that did a communist manifesto type thing and now there's mastodon?
I seriously don't know but it kinda looks like it.
@GoldenStar πŸ˜… no Fedi is the wider universe of federated social media! πŸ€— So, Mastodon is part of Fedi, but certainly not all of it. Was wondering for my mum whether PixelFed or Friendica would do as well...
@AdamBishop ah so like non-anarchy social media
@AdamBishop Pick an instance with a fun sounding name, like sunny.garden β˜€οΈ 🌸
@AdamBishop fwiw, I find that interacting with people's posts kinda helps to make the place feel social. I kinda miss the chit chat you could get in twitter threads (though G-d knows I don't miss the bs you'd also get in these threads)
@A_denie You're quite right! πŸ‘πŸ‘
@AdamBishop Not a suggestion, but a coincidence that this (about finding appropriate servers) appeared in my feed immediately after a boost of yours. https://mas.to/@kissane/113284384978898225

When Darius and I wrapped up our fedi governance research earlier this fall, I knew that one of the next steps I most wanted to work on was a set of ways to make it much easier for potential fediverse members to find genuinely good homes here. And by good homes, I mean servers/instances that are as safe and well protected and optimally connected aand moderatedβ€”*for a given membership*β€”as possible. But took me six tries to write this intro post about it: https://www.wrecka.ge/fediverse-shoes/

@AdamBishop No helpful recommendations, but your mum shares my interests and therefore sounds like a very cool, person so I just wanted to say WELCOME ADAM'S MUM (whenever you get here)!
@sally Aw, thank you πŸ™β€οΈ
@AdamBishop hi - @FediGarden has a comprehensive list of smaller, well moderated instances.
@WhombeX Oh, what a great list 😍 Thank you! πŸ™
@AdamBishop sunny.garden is a small and calm one. And I kinda disagree that it doesn't matter. There are badly run instances that have trouble with nasty trolls, others that are a lot into high drama,which sounds like a bad fit for her. Also, sometimes you just want to check out the local feed for possible new friends.
@chrys Thank you πŸ™. I'll check out sunny garden. I tried to find a local one, but there doesn't seem to be any... Maybe we'll have to start one!
