To begin - Setting the East and West Deutsch Mark at 1:1 made East firms unviable, leading to them being sold for peanuts and asset striped. At the same time, wage hikes in the East made the workers undesirable. All this leading to, that between 1989-1992 East manufacturing output fell by 67%. The effects were felt by a massive rise in unemployment. e.g. East Germans were 19% of German Population but 50% of the Unemployed. From then, until now, things didn't really get better.
