This doctored image was probably one of many created on Reddit when a tiny six millimeter capsule containing caesium-137 was lost in the Australian outback in January 2023.

@alex_mastodon @zemlanin @litbong @erin yeah, doctored as if it was real radioactive noise on the sensor it would not be concentrated in the middle. Also the use might not be feeling great. Amazing piece of meta humour though 😂. And I totally forgot about that missing capsule until now!

@Segebodo so the quoted »”do not eat”« text commonly appears on silica gel packets manufactured in china. that’s the point of the meme here.
if I had to guess, it’s probably a consequence of a chinese employee of a silica gel packet factory back in the 90s being told to add that text to the printed pattern - while not knowing any english and indeed anything about latin script typography. the thing had quotes so it went in there with quotes.
or maybe they even knew, but didn’t give a shit. they selected and pasted the whole thing with quotes and all and that’s how they printed billions of silica gel packets afterwards because no one cared to change it and everyone copied it.
tl;dr there’s no “why”, no one did it for any meaningful reason, it just happened and no one unhappened it.
it looks weird and silly to us, it looked like nothing to anyone involved in this because they didn’t care.
