After the interview I did with @JMSeaborn, someone mentioned that it was refreshing to hear a conversation between a man and a woman where *he* laughs at *her* jokes, not just the other way round.

I found this delightful (my m8s are gr8) and ofc depressing. Why is this so rare? Still?

While we were chatting about it I realised I'd written something touching on this topic yonks ago on the blog: https://www.girlonthenet.com/blog/a-guy-with-no-sense-of-humour-walks-into-a-bar/ (forgive clumsiness, it was 2015)

A guy with no sense of humour walks into a bar...

...the bartender says 'hey is that a copy of a bullshit Metro article about how women shouldn't have a sense of humour if they want to get laid?'

Girl on the Net

This has depressed me at various points when I've been dating - men who expect me to laugh at their jokes but don't laugh at mine, or even often recognise them as jokes in the first place.

I think @robyneatseverything discussed this a while back re: being a sexy person making hot content. When you do that, straight men with dicks in hand reply to even your funniest jokes with some reference to your tits/their boner rather than acknowledging your wit.

[Note: Robyn is NB, not a woman, but their comment was in context of men who view them as such, and act accordingly (i.e. in horny earnest)]

I don't think women talk about this much because if you go out there and say 'so weird that men don't laugh at any of my jokes' you open yourself up to some dude saying 'well you're not funny' and from there to 'women aren't funny.' Which is a tedious conversation to have to have.

Anyway while we're talking women and jokes, here's the incomparable Doon Mackichan in an interview that went up yesterday.

‘I regret being a little bit poor’: Doon Mackichan on stardom, Smack the Pony and never selling out

As an actor and comedian, she has worked with some patronising colleagues and creepy directors – but has always played the game on her own terms. She discusses Botox, nudity, universal credit and life as an uncompromising artist

Bumping this to say that Doon Mackichan is on RHLSTP next week so if you're in London go see her for like £20 which is ludicrously cheap: https://www.leicestersquaretheatre.com/show/richard-herrings-leicester-square-theatre-podcast/
