Invaders from Mars 1986

PeerTube
so we are departing from the vibe of the 60's version of invaders from mars by being able to express masculine parental affection so there is actually some discernible difference between bodysnatched dad and regular dad
#monsterdon
oh man i hope they stay faithful to all the wonderful moments we had with the 60's sand pit, both through the telescope and spelunking through it. truly the main character of the movie #monsterdon
hang on but dad didn't even go out to the sand pit! how could he be bodysnatched!? are we not going to get any scenes of dads being led out to the sand pit???? what's the point of the movie then!?!?! #monsterdon
zizek voice: ze libidinous excess of ze sand pit ees, i sink, ze realization of childhood gaze at ze parents, who seem to have supernatural power, use a credit card, leave ze house freely, and so on. what ees it that mommies and daddies do when they have closed the bedroom door at night? it ees precisely ze unknowable jouissance of ze sand pit, urging us not to consume, but be consumed by it. #monsterdon
ze child being able to identify ze alienation of ze father before ze wife is precisely ze alienation of marriage as property relation. ze ideological exercise of marriage, pay ze bills, mow the lawn, sex only on weekends, where our spouse ees already an invader from mars, "body snatched" from ze fantasmatic projection of the "girlfriend who was beloved," whose presence is ze Lacanian Point de capiton
#monsterdon
wait what was the like medieval weapon that the cops said the little playmate girl was killed with in the 60's version #monsterdon
oh right "poleaxe" lol. i wonder if the non-alien cops will just write off everything as a casual case of poleaxing again lol. i didn't realize how much i missed the totally sterile vibe of the 60's until seeing this one where like the after school special soft lit stuff is like "ah yes actually the baseline expectation is for people to care about the child's wellbeing" but the 60's one was like "sure just lock that kid up in the county jail thats normal" #monsterdon
WHOA we're already in the sand pit base 38 minutes in, that's a huge departure from the previous right, i don't think they went in there until the military was around #monsterdon
truly fuck me up with these aliens, 10/10 #monsterdon
so the alien is a sort of plant-like creature living in the hillside, slow moving/stationary, so that's why it has to mind control people to do its bidding externally and why it can't contain david even when he is spotted inside the base, which isn't a base so much as the alien's body #monsterdon
why couldn't they contain david? well could you tell your intestines to close to keep something inside? the alien probably doesn't have complete control over all the functions of its body #monsterdon
i know that this is "the whole point" and "everybody feels this way" but it is such a serious psychological weight off my mind when the protagonist who sees something that nobody else sees gets even one person who believes them. the anxiety of being alone is like 75% of the anxiety of horror movies to me #monsterdon
i appreciate how they are willing to share power and respect each other but i think this woman needs to take a little bit of control when the kid is leading you into the dead end boiler room and just sitting on a bench as the hiding spot #monsterdon
told from ze child's point of fview, invaders from mars is ze fantasy of ze inversion of parental order, ze fallibility of mommies and daddies in ze home, ze police station, and military base all become subordinate to the relationship between ze child and hees psychoanalyst, de expulsion of ze child into the Real #monsterdon
KID RADIO ENGINEER MOMENT #monsterdon
if the alien had evolved even slightly better surgical techniques to not leave a visible scar on the back of people's necks humanity would stand no chance #monsterdon
this older scientist military guy with the prosthetics on to make him look older is stealing every scene that he's in the background of #monsterdon
ok so while the plot might have been shifted around a bit, we do get the entire final 1/3 of the movie being ARMY MAN TIME as it was in the 60's version #monsterdon
the ARMY MAN TIME is actually hitting pretty different in a generation where they had like 20 more years of military industrial complex development and it's just a matter of deploying the right quantity of artillery at the beach #monsterdon
"we must study and befriend them" being introduced a little too late by both the kid and the scientist guy. at the point when we are one military casualty down and have like a whole division deployed #monsterdon
absolutely excellent "pop out snakes from a pringles can gag" alien guts #monsterdon
also like the 60's version, i am finding myself having absolutely no idea what the plan is here #monsterdon
we haven't heard the alien's case for why it's good to get mind controlled yet. as far as we know it's like an eternal peace, constant euphoria, mental paradise, one with all the other mind controlled people kind of mind control. it wouldn't take much in the way of promises to let an alien species jack my shit up, probably better than whatever i got goin on in here #monsterdon
basically i'm just out here waiting for the right cult or body snatching species with the right offer #monsterdon
so this version is leaning into the "it's all david's dream" ending by making the human leader his teacher right. #monsterdon
you can't make me care about an army man simply by having said his name while he fell haplessly into the sand pit, i don't need the ceremony for renaldi #monsterdon
i want them to like turn the lights up and do a walkthrough of the set and the props during the credits lmao let me get a good look at that shit #monsterdon
if i was davids parents and assume i got de-snatched, like you basically have to invite Linda to be part of your family right #monsterdon
they seem to have a bond and you can't like just shove someone out of your life after an experience like that, like a thruple or co-parenting situation for david's sake #monsterdon
this is like a respectful shot-for-shot-ish with the ending of the original, down to the bewildering "what the fuck am i looking at" light effects #monsterdon

alright so if you weren't here when we watched the 50's (i have been saying 60's this whole time lol) version, there were two endings to that one, the US version ended as a dream, but the UK version just ended and it was actually real

here's the UK ending: https://neuromatch.social/@jonny/112708859004671145

Attached: 1 video ok for everyone that watched the tubi version, this is how the archive.org version ends. no recap, no dream, just end.. I can't tell if this is a fan edit but it sure looks like it. edit: it's the UK edit, which is sort of a fan edit i guess https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invaders_from_Mars_(1953_film)#British_release #monsterdon

the US ending is more like this one, for some reason it recaps the entire movie to fade into a dream sequence, but then it does the thing that the 80's version does, which is be 'ambiguously a dream' but that one leans into 'actually the kid learns he's just imagining things' instead of 'fake dream but it was actually real'

around 1:17:15 ish here https://tubitv.com/movies/100019545/invaders-from-mars

Tubi is the largest free movie and TV streaming service in the US. We are not available in Europe due to changes in EU laws.

so what i'm saying is that we have the rumsfeldian quartet of invaders from mars endings

  • known known: UK 1953 ending - real aliens, concrete resolution (aliens blown up)
  • known unknown: US 1953 ending - dream aliens, concrete resolution (aliens were a dream)
  • unknown unknown: 1986 ending - dream aliens, ambiguous resolution

which means we need a fourth movie for "unknown knowns" - real aliens with uncertain resolution

#monsterdon

@jonny Johri Window!

I've been thinking about that a lot lately

my favorite part of the movie was this nasa guy with like one line and so i am shipping him with army guy who grabbed him and spun him around
