Hundreds more publications have joined the Fediverse through Flipboard's federation. Here's the first thread, I'll do another tomorrow.

If an account posts too much, try following one of its "sub-accounts" instead, as mentioned in each post. Alternatively use Mastodon's Lists feature.

p.s. Most of these accounts post a normal amount, but some of them post a LOT. If you want to narrow down what kind of posts you get from an account, try following an account's sub-account(s) instead of following the main account itself.

I've attached an example diagram at the bottom of this post to show what I mean, the example is a post from NPR's account.

Alternatively, you can use Mastodon's Lists feature to put accounts into their own mini-timelines, more info at https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

p.p.s. If an account looks blank, it isn't. All of these accounts are posting, just follow an account and you will see its posts start showing up in your timeline.

The reason they look blank is they only started federating a couple of days ago, so their posts may not have federated to your server yet. There's more info about this at https://fedi.tips/why-does-someones-account-page-look-completely-blank-is-it-really-blank/

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

p.p.p.s. As some people have asked, these are official accounts owned by the publications themselves. For example here's an article from 2012 where NPR discusses joining Flipboard:

https://www.npr.org/sections/inside/2012/05/16/152826526/flipping-for-npr

These accounts have been around for years on Flipboard itself, but only as an isolated platform.

However, since a couple of days ago, their Flipboard accounts started federating with the Fediverse. We can follow them, they can follow us. That's why I'm posting about them now.

@FediFollows Is this why certain replies in a thread don't show up? If so, is there a way to 'force' immediate federation?

@nopnop

Yes, in certain situations if no one on your server (or anyone they follow) has any connection to the author of a reply, then the reply may not show up.

You can always check the most complete version of a thread or profile by going to its original page, more info here: https://fedi.tips/what-are-original-pages-in-mastodon/

If you see a post or profile elsewhere and it isn't showing up on your server, you can force your server to notice it by pasting the post or profile link into the search box on your server.

@FediFollows Thanks for the info!

I've been on here for a couple of years now and encounter that every once in awhile. I always wondered what was up with that.

@Judeau

Accounts can prevent themselves ever looking blank to anyone by pinning posts on their profile.

Pinned posts are always visible to every server, so a profile with pinned posts never looks blank. More info at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-pin-my-posts-on-my-mastodon-profile/

@FediFollows thanks! But … no Art category? 🤔

@deborahh

There is art but I hadn't finished adding all the accounts in the latest batch. Also bear in mind this is just a list of accounts that Flipboard federated a couple of days ago. There are previously federated ones, and there are publications that aren't on Flipboard.

You can find lots of Art News accounts on the Fediverse at:

Lots of Flipboard accounts with tons of followers. Flipboard's move to the Fediverse has been quite beneficial so far.

@blackjam_alex
@FediFollows

Most of the accounts are empty... Is it a setting in my instance?

@alikatze @blackjam_alex

None of them are empty, but if you're the first person from your server to follow them they might look empty.

Just follow whatever you want to and its posts will start showing up on your server.

@FediFollows I'm so glad flipboard is making this happen because they're making a huge difference in the number of official media accounts here.

@FediFollows

Seems a little hyped, no? How many of these publications have even heard of Flipboard, let alone Mastodon?

Flipboard’s just a middleman platform—it doesn’t bring a publication’s team, and doubtful even their attention, and certainly not their engagement, to Mastodon. It just brings snippets of content to lure you to #Flipboard (if you’re not careful what you click on).

I think I’ll just hold out for the publications and their staff to join #Mastodon in an official capacity.

@brianstorms @FediFollows Seems like the links go directly to the pubs website. This may have not been the case in the past. I'm down for it, if a pub hasn't migrated here yet given the continued bleakness of Twitter they might not ever.

@johnglass @brianstorms

Yeah, the links are direct to the publishers' own sites. If you follow NPR it will just be stories with links direct to npr.org for example. The only way you would see Flipboard pages is if you were already browsing the flipboard site or app anyway.

Also, the federation is full activitypub, they can follow Mastodon etc accounts from Flipboard if they want to. The more of us follow and interact with them from here, the more likely they are to explore this audience.

@brianstorms @FediFollows this sounds like a whole bunch of trademark violations waiting to be prosecuted

@pettter @brianstorms

I think there's some misunderstanding here?

Flipboard isn't scraping sites without permission, these accounts belong to the publications themselves. Some of them have links to their Flipboard account from their own websites, see the attached screenshot. (Taken from https://www.pcgamer.com)

By the way, for what it's worth, I've only listed Flipboard accounts if they don't already have an active official Mastdon etc account. I checked each one before making the thread.

Here's another example of a publication discussing its Flipboard presence:

https://www.npr.org/sections/inside/2012/05/16/152826526/flipping-for-npr

These accounts have been going for years, but until now they were isolated from other platforms. The reason I'm posting about them is they are now connected to the Fediverse in both directions: we can follow them, they can follow us.

Hopefully if enough people from the Fedi start following and interacting with them, that they will notice the Fedi more.

@FediFollows @npr @MotherJones2021 @abc @PBSNewsHour @USAToday @CBSNews @msnbc @AssociatedPress @Jezebel @MsMagazine2019 @vanityfair @RollingStone @NewYorker @TheBulwark @RollCall @CivilEats

As much as I dislike seeing news in my feed, it's better for this to exist than every journalist being on Twitter, or honestly even Bluesky. Still, the doomposting on Fedi will probably get worse than it already is, and it already gets to me.
@FediFollows
If one clicks on these (mobile) and shows the account and follow button-evertthing but the posts, how can you see them

@wc_thats_me

Short answer: just follow an account and its posts will start appearing.

Long answer: These accounts are all brand new to the Fediverse, they've only been federating for a couple of days so they haven't had time to federate much.

If no one on your server has followed or interacted with them, their profiles may look blank from your server even though they aren't. More info at https://fedi.tips/why-does-someones-account-page-look-completely-blank-is-it-really-blank/

@FediFollows thank you for your help!
Are there any US National Parks on Fediverse?
Any US National Weather service accounts?

@wc_thats_me

I don't know of any national parks, there are a number of unofficial NWS feeds taken from official RSS sources:

@FediFollows What is the general opinion about Flipboard?

Since it is proprietary aggregator, I have blocked it from accessing my instance. But it feels like general attitude towards Flipboard is more of a positive, isn't it?

@gytisrepecka

Flipboard's approach to the Fediverse has been much more constructive than certain companies I could mention. They set up their own Masto instance and human-run Masto curation accounts like @NewsDesk, @CultureDesk, @TechDesk etc which highlight Fedi content.

The accounts I've listed in this thread are ones that have no active official presence on Mastodon etc and the account posts are links direct to the publishers' own websites, not Flipboard.

@gytisrepecka

Obviously best would be indie servers based on FOSS though, that's why I've avoided listing Flipboard accounts from publications that are already on Mastodon etc. And hopefully more publications follow the example set by @TexasObserver etc and set up their own servers.

@[email protected] And they are actually two-way accounts, right? As in, they see our interactions, and if we reply, they can reply back?
