People who use social media other than Mastodon    :

If you are still using some [BigCorpSocial™️] social media account(s),
I highly recommend maintaining a good data privacy hygiene on there. Especially because of all the data collected from these platforms, most recently, infamously, for scanning all your posts to feed For-Profit-AI-Machine™️

One important step to improve your data hygiene is to delete the older posts that are no longer useful to you (you can do this automatically on Mastodon by the way)

Many [BigCorpSocial™️] have rendered this task more difficult recently by removing features previously provided to third-party developers.

BUT there is a fantastic desktop app developed by @micahflee coming up for this with a workaround!

Semiphemeral!

Semiphemeral will make it possible for you to delete your older posts from your [BigCorpSocial™️] accounts, according to your preferences.

I don't often recommend tools like this,
but this one is a great one:

Privacy by Design ✅
From a trustworthy source ✅
Top practices for data minimization ✅
Runs locally ✅

I highly recommend it to anyone with social media accounts outside of the Fediverse.

Now that X is a steaming toxic trashpit, Semiphemeral can't come soon enough

While Elon Musk spreads hate and Trumpism across his platform, I've been hard at work developing Semiphemeral so you can regain control of your data on X. Here's how development has been going, and how the app will work.

@Em0nM4stodon
Sure you should do it.

Just don't expect it to really delete anything. More realistically it will set a deleted flag on posts.

@yacc143 There once was a script or browser add-on which did really such task as deleting/removing any type of content from fb. I don't remember the name of it sadly and don't know if it is somewhere still available or working as well. But I do remember one nice feature of it.. If it wasn't able to delete something it did overwritten an particular content with some random junk data that was totally useless to the fb money making algorithms and search engine
