If you are going to vote by mail, please mail your vote early. As soon as you get the ballot fill it out and send it back. Fill it out with care and read the directions carefully. I've been reading about a lot of legal fighting about how ballots will be counted. Republicans don't want ballots that arrive after election day to count. This ought not happen, but it's best to just get it over with.

Abundance of caution.

@futurebird Also, getting it done gets you removed from the rolls the get-out-the-vote and campaign people work from, so they can focus on those who didn't vote yet.

@martinvermeer @futurebird I do not trust campaigns to have checked the "ballot received" list.

So I took the "I voted" sticker that came with my ballot and stuck it on my mailbox.

@michael_w_busch @futurebird Indeed not all campaigns do this.

@martinvermeer @futurebird Campaigning has been pretty intense in my neighborhood for a town that we all know will go for Harris, Walz, and the Democratic Congressional candidates by a margin of at least 3 to 1.

But I suspect that is because of state legislature and judicial elections down-ballot.

@martinvermeer @michael_w_busch @futurebird And not all election agencies make it possible to do this. With some, just getting a voter file can take several days. Getting daily updates would be a dream.
@futurebird This is one of the reasons I love living in Oregon. We all vote by mail.
@futurebird they also want to exclude as many legitimately filled ballots. On the most spurious of reasons.
@futurebird also consider sending it back via a drop box instead of the mails if you can--the fewer middle-people involved the better.
@futurebird A symptom of democracy backsliding. Good luck out there folks.
@futurebird I live in Colorado, one of the vote-by-mail states. I use the drop box at the library near my house so I don’t have to worry about mail shenanigans. They get collected multiple times per day.
@futurebird In Michigan you can track your vote and see when it arrives, too. Not sure about other states, but I plan to mail mine back in the next couple of weeks. It's nice to be able to see when it arrives.
@futurebird overseas voters in some states can avoid USPS mail delay issues by sending their ballot via fax, which (in Sarasota county at least) generates an immediate reply from the board of elections acknowledging receipt.

@th @futurebird via @ZaneSelvans , I learn of delays with some electronic ballot submission systems.

All the more reason to vote early to give as much time as possible to ensure receipt.

@michael_w_busch Thankfully it was a transient issue! I was able to submit my CO ballot this morning.
@th @futurebird oh I don’t like the idea of a ballot getting wiretapped
@futurebird I just voted my absentee ballot online for North Carolina. It went super smooth! No muss. No fuss. No stamps.
@oliversampson Why do I have to live in cave man times in NYC???
@futurebird I learned the other day that the individual voting record on line is not accurate per the registrar's office. For example, my spouse voted in June primary but he records do not show that only that ballot was issued. My record is correct.
